Landslide kills seven in Magelang, C. Java

Magelang, Central Java (ANTARA News) - At least seven residents of Tanjungsari and Pasangsari villages in Magelang district, Central Java, were killed in a landslide on Sunday, Tanjungsari village head Sapari said.
Besides the fatalities, Sapari said four others were wounded and three remained missing in the disaster.
The seven fatalities were identified as Unus, Wahik, Mamik, Lukman, Tarik, Taufik and Andik, and the missing victims were Maskun, Juri and Sururi.
Rescue workers had evacuated the dead and the wounded victims, he said, adding that the rescuers would continue to search for Maskun, Juri and Sururi.
According to him, the landslide occurred at 10 a.m. when around 500 residents from the two villages were digging a ditch at the location.
"The landslide took place at 10 a.m. when some 500 residents from Tanjungsari and Pasangsari villages were digging a ditch for irrigation," Sapari said.
Meanwhile, Magelang police spokesman Bambang Budi said he had mobilized some 40 personnel to the location to help the evacuation process.
"We are still searching for the three missing victims," Bambang Budi said, adding that the rescue workers were hampered by a large pile of earth to about 20 meters thick.
Early this month, a landslide triggered by incessant rains in Cadasari Pandeglang, West Java, buried two persons to dead, and injured 13 others, while four residents went missing.
Indonesia is currently in the rainy season which arrived belatedly due to an El Nino-induced drought. Torrential rains have caused flash floods and triggered landslides in the provinces of Aceh, North Sumatra, West Sumatra, Riau, Jambi, North Sulawesi, Gorontalo and South Kalimantan in the past couple of months.
In January 2007, landslides and floods hit Sangihe District, North Sulawesi and killed 32 people and destroyed hundreds of houses and public infrastructures, wile two local residents were missing.
End of last month, landslides occurring in 19 points between Muraemat and Sungai Penuh towns cut off land communication between Jambi Province and Kerinci via Bangko, southern Sumatra.
