By the year 2002, the population had fallen to 32,900. In 2003 the town was almost completely evacuated before its destruction.
.jpg) Sunnydale, California, is the fictional suburban setting for the U.S. television drama Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Series creator Joss Whedon conceived the town as a representation of the typical, anonymous, generic suburban city, as well as a narrative parody of the all-too-serene towns typical in traditional horror movies.
Sunnydale's size and surroundings are implausible, as it was designed largely for comic effect and narrative convenience. During the first three seasons, Sunnydale was depicted as a small California town: population of 38,500, very few high schools, forty-three churches, a small private college,, a zoo, a museum, and one modest main street. Even so, it had twelve gothic cemeteries. These cemeteries are so heavily used that services are sometimes held at night. In later seasons it was revealed that Sunnydale sported a campus of the University of California system, and a profitable magic supply shop. The town was also seen to include a large park containing a creek and a lake, as well as a large cemetery adjacent to a lake.THE HOME OF BUFFY SUMMERS
Buffy Summers and her mother, Joyce, moved to 1630 Revello Drive, Sunnydale, California, from Los Angeles, California, following Buffy’s expulsion from Hemery High School for having burned down the school’s gymnasium in a fight against local vampires. The house consisted of two stories over a full basement. A wide concrete sidewalk led from the curb, through the middle of the front yard, past palms and other trees and through a gap in a low hedge that fronted the porch, to a short flight of steps that led up to the front door, on either side of which were picture windows flanked by tall, narrower windows. The porch, spanning the width of the house, was overhung by part of the residence’s roof, which was supported by four pillars, the two beside the steps having brick pedestals. Facing the house, there is a driveway to the right which leads alongside the house. It presumably leads to a garage, although no garage was ever shown in the series. The backyard stretches back to a fence which opens onto an alley. The house contained a full basement in which laundry facilities and the hot water tank were located along the back wall and a flight of stairs in the wall to the right led to the outside. The stairs to the basement were entered from the kitchen. The lower, or main floor was occupied by a foyer that led into a hallway off of which, facing away from the street, the dining room opened on the right and the living room opened on the left. A sitting room was located at the end of the hallway. The kitchen lay beyond the dining room, offering access to both the sitting room to its right and to the rear porch. A short flight of steps led from the back porch into the back yard. A staircase led from the foyer to the upper floor of the residence The upper floor contained three bedrooms. The master bedroom, facing the rear of the house, was initially occupied by Joyce. The front bedroom was initially occupied by Buffy. Between these there was a third room, which was a storage/sewing room and Joyce's home office until season four, but which became Dawn's bedroom in season five. Two gables projected from the roof, one over each of the picture windows. One of these gables contained the front window of Buffy’s bedroom, through which she sometimes came and went to patrol Sunnydale’s streets and cemeteries before she’d told her mother that she was a vampire slayer.
Between seasons five and six, Willow and Tara moved into the master bedroom, which was vacant following Joyce's death. When Buffy returned to life, she again took up residence in her old bedroom. Between seasons six and seven, when Willow was in England, Buffy moved to the master bedroom, and when Willow returned she took Buffy's old room.
SUNNYDALE HIGH SCHOOL
Sunnydale High is a fictional high school in Joss Whedon's TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Located in Sunnydale, it competes with Fondren High ("Some Assembly Required"). It was headed by Principal Bob Flutie early in the first season. After he was eaten in "The Pack", a strict Principal Snyder took over on the recommendation of Mayor Richard Wilkins. The Master rose in the season finale after the Sunnydale High School library showed itself to be on top of the Hellmouth, a subterranean, mystical portal that attracts evil like a magnet. Rupert Giles was conveniently the librarian, and Buffy and her Scooby Gang usually hang there and strategize. The school football team are the Razorbacks and wear maroon and yellow.
Season three ended with a bang -- Principal Snyder was eaten by the Mayor-cum-demon before the latter was blown up along with the entire school building by Rupert Giles. It is possible that the boast made by the Class of 1999 at their prom -- that the graduating class had the lowest mortality rate in Sunnydale history -- went with the explosives. After its ruins lay for a while, Xander Harris helped rebuild it by season seven -- the Principal's office is now directly over the Hellmouth -- only for it to be sucked into a giant hole along with an empty Sunnydale in the battle with the First Evil.
The real building is Torrance High School, located at 2200 W. Carson St, Torrance, CA 90501, approximately 20 miles from downtown Los Angeles. The exterior shots of New Sunnydale High were filmed at California State University, Northridge in Northridge, California.
THE BRONZE
The Bronze is a nightclub in Sunnydale, the fictional setting for the television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Of 144 episodes of the series, 66 have at least one scene at The Bronze.
As the lead characters of Buffy were in high school during the first three seasons, the Bronze was depicted primarily as a coffee bar that hosts live music and serves as a nightclub. By season three, it became clear that the Bronze has a liquor license, although the main characters were still usually seen drinking cappuccinos or hot chocolate.
While the drinking age in California is 21, it's generally ignored in the show other than when it's needed as part of the story. Some bartenders at the Bronze will not serve young people drinks without ID. The episode "Something Blue" in season four has Willow pining after Oz and dancing drunk. A bottle of beer rolls away from her, leading Xander and Buffy to discover her drunkenness--Buffy reprimands her, reminding her of her own *fun* foray into drinking in the episode "Beer Bad." However, no consequences come directly from Willow's drinking. In one episode of season five, Dawn had to wear a wristband indicating that she was underage, but this must have been a temporary rule at the Bronze, because it never happened again. Moreover, Buffy, Willow, Xander, and Tara did not have to wear wristbands, even though they were only twenty years old at the time.
That The Bronze plays live music is not only used as a plot device for Oz's band Dingoes Ate My Baby but also as a subtle means for the production team to showcase new bands from the Los Angeles area, as well as more well known artists and bands such as Aimee Mann, Splendid, Cibo Matto, Angie Hart, Michelle Branch and Nerf Herder.
THE MAGIC BOX
.jpg/200px-The_Magic_Box_2_(Real_Me).jpg) In the TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The Magic Box is a magic shop in Sunnydale last owned and operated by Rupert Giles. The Magic Shop had a full basement, which was used to store excess stock, and a loft in which many of the esoteric volumes from the Sunnydale High School library were kept after they'd been removed from the library in preparation for its detonation as a means of killing the demonic mayor Richard Wilkins in the episode entitled "Graduation Day, Part II".
The shop itself displayed merchandise on tables, on shelves and racks, and inside glass counters. A room behind the shop was reserved as a training area for Buffy, where she could practice hand-to-hand combat and martial arts techniques and tactics. It was equipped with a punching bag, a pommel horse, tumbling mats, protective pads, and other paraphernalia and included an armory of various weapons. In addition to the Orb of Thessula, the following merchandise was available for sale at The Magic Box: Skink root ("Lovers Walk") Essence of rose thorn ("Lovers Walk") Canary's feathers ("Lovers Walk") Essence of violet ("Lovers Walk") Cloves ("Lovers Walk") Set of runic tablets ("Lovers Walk") Rats' eyes ("Lovers Walk") Holy water ("Lovers Walk") Unicorn statue ("Real Me") Salamander Eyes Essence of Slug candles ("Life Serial") Eyeballs in honey ("Life Serial") Dagger of Lex ("Life Serial") Petrified hamster ("Life Serial") Mummy's hand ("Life Serial") Mandrake Root ("All the Way") Green Egg Magazine ("Triangle")
THE HELLMOUTH
Long before humans settled the area, an entrance to the Hellmouth existed at the site of the future town of Sunnydale. Directly beneath Sunnydale High School is an entrance to the Hellmouth, a subterranean, mystical portal that attracts evil like a magnet. This functions as a major plot device in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, as it explains why vampires and other demons are so prevalent in Sunnydale. Hellmouths are places of increased supernatural energy. According to the mythology of the "Buffyverse", this is the area in which the barriers between dimensions are weak. The Hellmouth has a focal point which serves as a portal between earth and at least one hell dimension. For these reasons, the Hellmouth attracts demons and other supernatural creatures, becoming a "hot spot" for supernatural activity. The energies emitted by the Hellmouth can have strange effects. Sunnydale High, positioned over the focal point, bore most of this supernatural phenomena. Buffy described the effects of the seal as, "in this school, over the hellmouth. ..Where the way a thing feels — it kind of starts being that way... for real". For example, a shy girl who feels invisible, becomes invisible and is taken away to a school for other invisible children. A boy suffering from stress literally explodes. The ghosts of dead high-school lovers haunt the school. In season 7, when the Hellmouth becomes more active than at any other time in the series, competitiveness between social cliques escalates into full-blown war. Inexplicable feats of science become possible. People (mostly teachers and students) become drawn to do evil things.
The Seal of Danzalthar is a fictional device resembling a demonic symbol, featuring an inverted pentagram and a goat's head. The Seal is seen in Season 7 of the series, in the episode Conversations With Dead People. It is located over the Hellmouth in the basement of the rebuilt Sunnydale High School. Andrew Wells is seduced by The First Evil in the form of Andrew's dead friend Warren Mears into opening the Seal. The Seal can only be opened by a blood sacrifice, so Andrew brutally murders his friend Jonathan Levinson who, because he is anemic, doesn't have enough blood to open the Seal. Jonathan's body and the Seal are found by Principal Robin Wood and buried.
