More views at the break

At the half-way point of the baseball season, the St. Louis Cardinals look like anything but defending world champions. The first half of the season has been a maddening mix of injuries and inconsistencies, fits and starts. The team has also had to deal with the death of pitcher Josh Hancock in a drunk-driving crash in April. Ace Chris Carpenter has been out since opening day with an elbow injury that required surgery to remove bone spurs. And Jim Edmonds, David Eckstein and other key players have all missed extended time. The Cardinals fell as far as 10.5 games behind NL Central leading Milwuakee in late June. At 7.5 games back at the All-Star break, they're still within striking distance, with Carpenter, Edmonds and Eckstein all expected back soon. After a rough first half, the Chicago Cubs are picking up steam. On June 2nd, a tantrum got manager Lou Piniella suspended and the Cubs were 9 games under .500. The next day, the Cubs won and started a streak in which they went 22-and-12 over the last 5 weeks of the first half to end up one game over .500. Ace Carlos Zambrano won 10 games, but not without a dugout and clubhouse fight with his catcher Michael Barrett, who eventually got traded to the San Diego Padres. That deal came after the 2 teams brawled at Wrigley Field, leaving Derrek Lee with a 5-game suspension that he's still appealing. Lee is batting .330 at the break despite only 6 homers, and 3rd baseman Aramis Ramirez has been a solid run producer with 51 RBI's.
