A Very Expensive Remote Control


So you are at home, and your iPhone is hooked into your home Airport Extreme network. You have a computer that is streaming through AirTunes to your stereo system as well. In your hand, you now have the worlds most expensive iTunes Remote Control!

Once I have a chance, I'll do a post about using iRTrans to control other home stereo equipment through iPhone, as well as using Indigo from Perceptive Automation to control your lights.Using local network browsing through WiFi, the iPhone can function as a robust home controler while in your house.


What if I need Office on the iPhone?


If there is one thing that Microsoft Smartphones have going for them, its their ability to enable the user to use the device as a true desktop extension through its integration of a scaled down version of Microsoft Word on the device. If there is one thing that they dont' have going for them, its their battery life, but that's another story.
Zoho Office sees this, and they also see the fact that iPhone has a fully fledged Safari Browser on it. In the spirit of Trips to Australia coding runs, the Zoho guys are launching iPhone ready versions of their Zoho apps. With iZoho, you have spreadsheets, word processing and slide shows at your disposal, all with common file formats to the Redmond companies ubiquitous applications.
Through Zoho's API as well, using Automator, there could potentially be a method of auto-mirroring your documents via a Smart Folder to Zoho. We'll explore that in a later hint.


Use Smart Playlists in iTunes, Save iPhone Space


With only 4GB or 8GB of memory capacity, it may be useful to set a limit on the amount of music you wish to store on your iPhone. This can be accomplished by creating a Smart Playlist in iTunes.
To create a Smart Playlist, click on the File menu in iTunes and choose New Smart Playlist. In the example below, my criteria finds all songs that I've given a 5-star rating. However, the size of this playlist is limited to 2GB with randomly selected tracks. This ensures my playlist will contain a random assortment of my favorite tracks, but will never exceed 2GB.Smart Playlist in iTunes
When you connect your iPhone to your Mac or PC, be sure to sync it with your newly created Smart Playlist. By keeping a steady limit on your iPhone's music library, you'll provide enough ample space for other types of content: photos, emails, videos, etc. Be sure to experiment with different size threshold settings, and find the one that work best for you.

Apple caused some controversy by stating that the only way for third parties to write applications for the iPhone is by using standard Web 2.0 technologies. Why this caused controversy is anyones guess, as most Internet pundits have spent the past two years exposing the benefits of AJAX/JSON/Javascript as a platform.


Anyhow, because the iPhone uses Safari, application development has happened quickly. The iPhone Application List is the first directory of apps available. iPhoneHints will be cataloging and linking to good apps from time to time as well.
