Remy Ma interview
Aug 14, 2007 04:08:04
She walks back and forth in a slow, sexy swagger. The mic is inches from her full lips. The crowd goes wild as Remy Ma switches up the lyrics to Rick Ross’s southern banger, “Hustlin”. Remy can spit. Even if the backup music drowns out her lyrics, Remy still keeps the crowd intrigued, awaiting her next bar.
While growing up in the Castle Hill section of the Bronx, Remy encountered the late, Big Pun. He became her mentor and friend in the rap game. Later, she hooked up with Fat Joe and Terror Squad. In 2005, the leading lady of the Terror Squad collected a BET Award for “Best Female Rapper” and was featured on the summer’s hottest joint, “Lean Back.”
Remy is currently signed to SRC records, a division of Universal records, Remy vented on Hot 97 about the promotion of her album calling out record execs, and partner, Fat Joe. Confident about her skills, Remy passionately spoke in the interview about her lack of support and backing on her first album, 'There's Something About Remy'. Although album sales are chilly, Remy continues to push on.
In meeting Remy, her reputation as a boisterous queen miss can be intimidating. The need for acknowledgement as a qualified artist is evident. She’s just a girl trying to survive a life through music. Her life written as a Bronx tale.
Nobodysmiling.com : As a young girl you used to write poetry. Have you written anything lately?
Remy Ma : Yeah, I feel like all my rhymes are poetry, but I mean like as far as like at least like once a month, cause I write so many rhymes I never have time to just focus on my poems. Eventually one day I would like to put them in a book.
Nobodysmiling.com : Like Alicia Keys, she put her poems into a book.
Remy Ma : Oh word. That’s hot.
Nobodysmiling.com : In your 'Conceited' video, you have a sense of assertiveness to your sensual/queen bee side. What would be your ultimate fantasy and who would you share it with?
Remy Ma : I would be stranded on an island where weed grows like everywhere. Wild. With some birth control and with like, Morris Chestnut or somebody, and Toni Braxton’s CD.
Nobodysmiling.com : Which CD?
Remy Ma : The Ultimate Hits
Nobodysmiling.com : Besides introducing you to the game, what made Big Pun such an inspiration to you?
Remy Ma : I mean like to me Pun was to the Bronx, what Big was to Brooklyn. He was the person that was from our hood, you could catch him and see him in the hood. He had made it and he had did it and he was Tom Nice. Even before I met him it was like Pun, oh my God, are you crazy? Nobody’s fucking with Pun; there were always arguments around the block. So for me to actually meet him and to think he is so nice and so crazy, and he thinks I’m nice and I’m crazy and that right there was motivation right there. Nobodysmiling.com : Do you miss him?
Remy Ma : So much.
Nobodysmiling.com : Being so new to the game, tell me about any harsh realities you have experienced while being in the business.
Remy Ma : Everything you do is like under the microscope. Even when you think no one is watching, somebody is watching. So you really got to br careful of everything that you say; everything that you do. It’s hard for me because I’m an impulse type of chic. Whatever I think or whatever I feel at that very second, that’s what I am gonna go by. It’s just real hard. Not even as far as having fights and battles, just like having a relationship or seeing your family. Like shopping or regular stuff. Some days you don’t want to be bothered. Lot of times people forget that we are regular people and nobody’s happy everyday. People have bad days, people have things happen in your family. You can’t turn it off, this job is worse than a 9 to 5. It’s 24/7.
Nobodysmiling.com : Tell me about your most memorable battle?
Remy Ma : My most memorable battle would be with Pun. I had this rhyme like almost every word was with 'S'.
(Starts Flowing) Slap your shorty in 6.7 seconds/It's getting starved by my soldiers/who get to feeling on the left/ Get to steppin'/serious split my sound ways are snear/scrap with a stupid ass on the sound stage/ skip the subject you snitch/cause you sort of suspect/and if you swallow semen sir/surely it wasn't safe sex/stay back/slaughtering like……………& hellip;…..
Oh Damn! Like I don't even remember, that part is somewhere in there. I know that's not how it starts. It was crazy, and then he said a rhyme from off of the Capital Punishment album, like if I'm not from the Bronx and I don't know all his rhymes. I 'm like you dead cheating, that's off your album and you lose. He swore it was some new version that he made, because we said you can’t say any rhymes off your album.
Nobodysmiling.com : You don't seem too happy with your label, SRC. Have you been shopping around for your next album?
Remy Ma : I am definitely in the works to see where I am going to go, because I am only signed to them for so many albums anyway. I am looking into options with that. At this present moment I am still working this album. I'm not happy with the way things went, but I can't really say it's bad. I am moving into my third single right now, "It feels so good," featuring Ne-Yo. I just did the "Conceited" remix with Papoose, myself, Lil' Wayne and Trina.
Nobodysmiling.com : Is there a video for 'It feels so good'?
Remy Ma : We do, we do. I think Dominican Republic is where we're shooting. Also we are doing mini DVD movie where I am doing 'Guilty', 'Crazy', and 'Lights Camera Action' and three other songs from off my album that we are going to make videos too.
Nobodysmiling.com : You seem to emanate a confidence, even an air of cockiness. Where does this come from? Is this a part of your image or is this the real Remy?
Remy Ma : I'm a Gemini. I think all Gemini's think they're the best at everything. No one is smarter than us, No one is faster than us, No one is stronger than us, and no one can beat us. All Gemini's that I have ever met is like that. I grew up fast and I raised myself. When I was 13 or 14, I really didn't have any parents, I had to listen to. It was like whatever I say-goes. So it's hard for me, where I'm at now to actually start listening to someone else. I am just my own person. I am not a follower. I don't gotta be the boss as long as I'm in charge.
Nobodysmiling.com : Do you consider yourself a feminist?
Remy Ma : Only when I am dealing with male chauvinist pigs. There are a lot of women that feel like me, but they don't say what they want or do what they really want because they don't want to be unladylike Or they don't want to step out of their so-called mold that we are suppose to be in. To me, I feel like I represent for all the chicks that really don't give a fuck. I don't care. Like whatever.
Nobodysmiling.com : Is there any hip-hop artist, male or female, that you would like to battle?
Remy Ma : Not really battle. Um to do a song with, I would have to say Eminem. I think he's crazy.
Nobodysmiling.com : Where did the name Remy Ma come from?
Remy Ma : My real name is Remy. All the alcoholics I know named me Remy Martin. All the lazy people I know shortened it to Remy Ma.
Nobodysmiling.com : What is next for Remy Ma?
Remy Ma : I am trying to do this reality show thing. It’s going to be like 'Flavour of Love' meets Remy Ma.
Nobodysmiling.com : Are you working with any networks?
Remy Ma : VH-1 actually. I have been speaking to them I have been doing a lot of stuff. I am on tour right now with Keysha Cole. That’s going good. I am just trying to do whatever comes to me.
