400 Turkey Plant Jobs Threatened in Wales
Posted: Jan 12, 2007

Wales - More than 400 jobs are under threat at a turkey processing plant in Monmouthshire. Cranberry Foods, the UK's second largest turkey producer, is carrying out a review of the business. A spokesperson said it could not rule out the possibility of redundancies or the closure of its factory in Abergavenny. Competition from cheaper foreign imports have resulted in "significant reductions" in turkey production. Joint managing director, Andrew Lewins, said they decided just after Christmas to produce fewer turkeys in 2007 because of market competition. This includes turkeys from Poland and Hungary and frozen turkeys from Brazil. Derbyshire-based Cranberry Foods, which has a turnover of around £85,000,000, bought the plant in 2003, saving 600 jobs after the previous owners Brandons called in receivers. The company has its own farms as well as using growers in south Wales, Herefordshire and across England. With around 900 employees in factories in Scropton, Derbyshire and Abergavenny, staff in the Monmouthshire plant were told on Tuesday that there would be a 90-day consultation period to review the business. Producers for the Abergavenny factory have been told how it will affect them.
