METRO NEWS BRIEFS: CONNECTICUT; Tribe Fires Legal Shot In Dispute on Casino Bills
Published: August 20, 1999
The Mashantucket Pequot tribe served state officials with court papers yesterday disputing the bills it has received for regulatory services at the Foxwoods Resort Casino.
The tribe said it planned to file the actual lawsuit against the state in Superior Court in Hartford by Sept. 14.
The lawsuit will seek to dismiss or reduce $3.9 million billed to the tribe for the cost of state police officers, liquor agents and gaming regulators who were assigned to the casino over the last two years.
The tribe said these expenses are covered under an agreement that gives the state one-quarter of the casino's slot machine revenues. Richard Blumenthal, the State Attorney General, said the tribe's claim would be contested. On Aug. 10, the tribe paid $1.3 million, one-third of what the state says it is owed.
