Sault Ste. Marie's New Timekeeping System

City adopts new time clock policy

SAULT STE. MARIE - A new timekeeping system, the formation of a committee to find a new home for the I-500 Snowmobile Race and two recommendations from the Sault Ste. Marie Historical Development Commission highlighted Monday's meeting of the Sault Ste. Marie City Commission.

The commission unanimously adopted a time clock policy governing virtually all hourly employees. In some instances, employees will be required to punch a traditional time clock, while those with computer access will use their personal computers to log in and out on a daily basis.

City Manager Spencer Nebel outlined a number of pros and cons in implementing the system. On the plus side, the new system will reduce paperwork and increase accountability. It will also make it easier for supervisors to detect work patterns. On the down side, however, employees who traditionally begin their work early will likely generate more overtime under the new system. Many employees may view it in a negative light, interpreting it as a lack of trust in their work ethic.

The new time clocks will require a one-time expenditure of $10,750, with an annual maintenance cost pegged at $13,521.clock
