Waterloo Immigration Rally Draws A Crowd

Waterloo, Ia. – About 400 people marched from a church rally to a protest in front of the National Cattle Congress to voice anger about the raid in Postville last week and to advocate immigration reform.

The marchers carried American, Mexican and Guatemalan flags and signs that criticized U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Detainees from the immigration raid at the Agriprocessors meatpacking plant in Postville are being held at the National Cattle Congress.

Father Paul Ouderkirk of St. Bridget’s Catholic Church in Postville questioned the commitment of the governor and Iowa’s U.S. senators to aiding those who were left jobless or whose family members were detained in the raid.

“We have waited too long,” Ouderkirk said. “I am tired. We have been pushed around for too long.”

Ouderkirk mentioned previous raids in Texas and Marshalltown, then pointed to the ICE agents stationed at the gate to the Cattle Congress.
