Kabul: Fifty-five Taliban members were killed by US-led coalition troops close to Afghanistan’s border with Pakistan, the US military said on Monday.
The military said the insurgents ambushed them with small arms fire and rocket-grenades in the Zerok district of Paktika province in southeastern Afghanistan on Friday.
"Around 55 anti-Afghan forces were killed, 25 wounded and three detained as part of the combined response of coalition ground and air forces," the statement said.
Coalition troops also killed several insurgents in operations in Ghazni province, southwest of Kabul, and in Helmand province in the south.
Violence along Afghanistan's eastern frontier has sharply increased in recent months.
