UAE: Beijing Olympics to be one of the best games
Jul 19, 2008 10:02:15

ABU DHABI, July 18 (Xinhua) -- The upcoming Beijing Olympics will be one of the best games in the history of the event, said Ibrahim Abdul Malik, secretary general of the National Olympic Committee (NOC) of the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Malik, who will lead the UAE delegation, visited Beijing last month to make preparations for the delegation and was impressed by the capital of China.

While staying in Beijing, "we visited the facilities including stadiums and the village. Everything is perfect," he told Xinhua in an interview.

The main stadium of the Beijing Olympics, or common known as the " Bird's Nest," "is something unique and is a work of art," he added.

"I'm sure this will be one of the best games," he said.

On Thursday, the UAE NOC launched a series of promotional activities for the Beijing Olympics in association with the Consulate General of China in Dubai and Dubai Municipality in Dragon Mart, a wholesale center for Chinese products in Dubai.

The launch of the promotional activities for the Beijing Olympics indicate that "we are supporting China in the holding of Olympics and we hope that the Beijing Olympics will be a success," Malik said.

"The success of the Chinese people is also the success of the UAE people," he added.

The UAE athletes, including six men and two women, are now gearing up for the upcoming games, Malik said.

"We hope that in shooting we will have good results," he said, referring to Sheikh Ahmed Mohammed Hasher Al Maktoum, who won the UAE's only Olympic gold medal at the 2004 Athens Olympics in the Men's Double Trap.
