DCCCD Presents: African-American Read-In February 3, 2007 Time: Saturday, 2pm Cost: FREE!!! DCCCD proudly celebrates eight years of reading and learning. Associated with a national program initiated by the Black Caucus of the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) and endorsed by NCTE, the Read-In promotes reading, communication and cultural understanding. Now in its 18th year nationwide, the African American Read-In continues to focus on literacy and black literary culture. The Read-In includes readings of black literature by local and national actors, personalities, poets, orators, community members and community leaders. More than 14,000 participants attended the 2006 Dallas Read-In, which kicked off numerous read-in activities throughout Black History Month. Over 10,000 people from Dallas-area families, churches, schools, neighborhoods, organizations and agencies promoted and celebrated literacy during February 2007. Nationally, more than two million participants have been documented to date. The highly anticipated 2007 African American Read-In builds on the success of previous years as it continues to promote literacy in Dallas. The African American Read-In gains popularity each year with a growing audience of literacy advocates and enthusiasts. DCCCD is pleased to present the 2006 African American Read-In. This partnership also includes local media, publishers, schools, libraries, book stores, communities of worship, businesses and a growing list of sponsors, celebrities and volunteers - all enthusiastically supporting reading and literacy.
