Green energy plant proposed for NT
Posted: Feb 15, 2007
By REBEKAH CAVANAGH 15feb07 THE Territory could be home to a multi-million dollar renewable energy plant -- which would turn green waste into electricity -- by the end of next year. The environmentally-friendly plant would be the first of its kind in Australia. It would turn the Top End's green waste and wood residues into bio-oil fuel, which produces electricity, heat and value-added chemicals. Darwin City Council and Victorian-based energy company Renewable Oil Corporation announced the proposal yesterday. It would be built at Shoal Bay in Darwin. Corporation chief executive Colin Stucley said Darwin was an ideal place to build the plant. "Darwin has a combination of things, such as the strong environmental policy here to enhance the environment and still do good things for the community. That makes our job easier," he said. "Darwin has a great green waste collection scheme and there are mining companies down the road that can take oil that we produce to make electricity." The energy plant would use pyrolysis technology -- a simple procedure of using heat to break green waste down into oil and charcoal -- to produce fuel and electricity. It will also generate green electricity to be put into the Darwin grid for residents to purchase. Mr Stucley said benefits to the NT include: LONG-term, effective use of Darwin's greenwaste; GREEN electricity for Darwin customers; MAJOR capital spend using Darwin labour and suppliers; and PERMANENT full-time jobs, plus flow on for contractors, services and indirect jobs. He said the project also had the potential to attract international visitors. Acting Lord Mayor Chris Tilley said council welcomed the plant with open arms.
