Turtle's broken shell fixed with fibreglass
Posted: Feb 26, 2007

By Paul Jackson February 25, 2007 12:00am Article from: Sunday Territorian A TURTLE has undergone unusual "surgery" to fix its shell after being hit by a car. Ten-year-old Shelly's underside was repaired with fibreglass in a one-hour operation by vets at Darwin's Ark Animal Hospital at Yarrawonga. Shelly was taken to the hospital a few days ago by a man who found her on the side of a road in Palmerston. Wildlife Rescue Darwin co-ordinator Lisa Hansen said the operation was quite tricky but the outcome was positive. "It will take the turtle about 12 months to shed the fibreglass, as it grows in size," Ms Hansen said. "It was hit by a car crossing a road while probably looking for water. "Turtles move around quite a bit, from one waterway to the next. We quite often get turtles brought in with similar injuries but mainly they have been the victims of dog attacks. "We've done two fibreglass operations on turtles in the past and they have proved successful." Ms Hansen said Shelly would be cared for in the rural area until she was well enough to be released into the wild.
