Ever thought of travelling north in search of a beach? No, we thought not. Sweden can be surprisingly hot in summer, the daylight hours extraordinarily long and the beaches incredibly deserted. For sheer beauty, head to the island of Gotland, in the Baltic Sea about 100 miles south east of Stockholm.

It's a popular holiday spot for Swedes, but with 50 miles of coastline, you'll often have the beach to yourselves. It also has the best sunshine record in Sweden, so be sure to take plenty of sunscreen.

Tofta, just south of the capital, Visby, has one of the most popular beaches. Families tend to flock to the quieter northern stretch, whilst the hedonist youngsters like to make the most of the long summer evenings and party in the south. Many of the beaches are stony, but you'll be captivated by the most amazing rock formations.
