  •  Casting Accepting Resumes For Hannah Montana MovieDisney and It's A Laugh Productions announced that they are going to start shooting "Hannah Montana: The Movie" in late January 2007.  The feature length film will be released in theatres worldwide, instead of being released as a Disney movie.  Although the writers strike is going on right now, Bob Iger, Disney's Chief Executive, says that the effects of the strike won't be felt in the film business until 2009.  This, of course, means that everything is on schedule for the upcoming films "High School Musical 3", "Cheetah Girls 3: Indian Adventure", "Dadnapped" and the afore mentioned Hannah Montana movie.  On a side note, there are still accepting photos and resumes at the casting office for the Hannah Montana film.  For more information on casting, see below.

  • Another Year of Dreams to Come!

2007 has seen families entering a fairy-tale realm within the Magic Kingdom to spend a night living like princes and princesses. It's found Guests throughout the Disney Parks gifted with surprises big and small as part of the Disney Dreams Giveaway - from custom trading pins to cruises to Europe, from a DREAM FASTPASS badge that cuts the wait time for some of the most popular Disney attractions to a personal chat with a Disney Princess. This year has truly seen the magic of Disney come alive for Guests at Disney Parks as never before.

Well, 2007 is winding to a close in a few short months - but happily, the dreams will keep coming true! The Walt Disney Company has announced that The Year of a Million Dreams will continue through 2008, with all-new dreams to be granted (as well as many continuing favorites) as part of the new 2008 Disney Dreams Giveaway*. Faron Kelley of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts told us what's coming: "We have some great surprises, including the roll out of wonderful new attractions and entertainment in both... ... California and Florida, and a million new dream prizes that will be awarded across both Resorts." These new prizes include a very special new experience at Disneyland that is resurrecting one of Walt Disney's own dreams for the Park.

Faron is "global project development director"  - and, as he explains it, "Basically, that means I'm the celebration guy!" And he says that the new plans have been in the works for about half a year, although they've been kept tightly under wraps until now. "After the six months for The Year of a Million Dreams, we said 'This is really something that's just too good to take away.' We wanted to give a longer chance to more of our Guests to experience it," he explains.

"Some dream prizes will be brought back by popular demand, such as the one-of-a-kind Mickey Mouse ears, which have been redesigned a little bit; the Dream FASTPASS badge, which has been wildly popular item; and the limited-edition pin and lanyard set, also redesigned for the celebration. We'll also continue with $500 shopping sprees, some fun dining experiences, and with the one-night stay in the Cinderella Castle suite.

One prize that is not returning, however, will be replaced by something that is sure to have Disney fans buzzing. "We're not going to be continuing the Mickey suite in California, because we have a brand-new surprise that's coming in - the development of the Disneyland Dream Suite, which will give Guests on most nights the opportunity to stay overnight inside Disneyland Park," Faron reveals. "The Disneyland Dream Suite is being built specifically for The Year of a Million Dreams. It's going to be in what was once the Gallery in New Orleans Square. That space, amazingly enough, was originally intended by Walt to be an apartment for family and friends. Walt had his own apartment on Main Street, but he wanted a larger space where family and friends could stay when they visited the Park. It was never brought to fruition, but working with Walt Disney Imagineering we found the original plans that Walt Disney himself had commissioned, and those renderings are being used as inspiration for the development of the Disneyland Dream Suite!"

In addition to the prizes, The Year of a Million Dreams will see some exciting new attractions and entertainment at both Resorts in 2008. Look for "Toy Story Mania!, an amazing new attraction opening this summer at Disney-MGM Studios in Florida and Disney's California Adventure. It's a ride-through Toy Story competition inspired by Disney*Pixar's 'Toy Story' films," Faron explains. "It has some wonderful effects - in addition to keeping score for you as you interact with the attraction, it's done in 3D so you wear 3D glasses as you ride through using your spring-action shooter as you aim at targets, It's a very immersive experience for the entire family."

Also, in spring 2008, look for Block Party Bash to leave Disney's California Adventure and make its way across the country to Disney-MGM Studios.  The new Pixar Play! Parade will open at Disney's California Adventure. At both Disney-MGM Studios and Disney's California Adventure, Playhouse-Disney Live on Stage! will have a whole new cast of characters and a new show beginning in the spring.

Isn't a year normally 365 days? Sure - but for the dream-makers at Disney, anything is possible, and with the new prizes and surprises coming your way, we're betting that Guests will not be complaining about this two-year-long Year of far more than a Million Dreams.

    Making the Haunts Even Happier

That old, creepy, uninhabited mansion -- you know, the one where you sometimes hear mysterious sounds and see eerie apparitions? I think something's going on up there. Ever since June, I seem to hear weird noises in the dead of night ... noises suspiciously like hammering and sawing. But none of the 999 permanent residents seem to be leaving the joint. Is it possible that that place is going to get even SPOOKIER?

That's right -- in case you haven't heard the news through the ghoulish grapevine, the Magic Kingdom Park's venerable Haunted Mansion is getting a facelift. New details are being added to reward sharp-eyed spookhunters, and some high-tech magic is being put to use to create old-fashioned thrills. Kathy Rogers, Senior Show Producer for the attraction, told us what to expect if you dare to venture through the doors of this most beloved attraction, which is slated to reopen this month.

"For several months, our team has been "illusioneering," making the invisible, visible," explains Kathy. "For example, a previously unseen...
... wing of the Mansion has been revealed for the first time. Observant Guests will see more of the 999 happy haunts cavorting on a seemingly endless staircase leading to secret realms. Watch closely and you'll see evidence of these residents -- their glowing footprints, candles going out -- is it the wind or did someone blow them out? It's for you to decide. Other haunts reveal themselves in the mansion's infamous Corridor of Doors -- don't blink or you'll miss the clues!"

The Haunted Mansion is one of the Disney Theme Park attractions that have inspired legions of passionate fans. The last thing anyone wanted to do was to change the experience in a way that would disappoint Guests, and Kathy and her team were acutely aware of the necessity to "strengthen the story, and not change it." So in many cases they expanded on the lore that already existed -- as in Kathy's own favorite addition: "In the attic the long, sad tale of Constance on her wedding days finally comes to light. For almost 40 years, our Guests have come face to face with Constance the bride. Now it's time for them to meet her and her grooms face to face -- all five of them! They all loved Constance," she laughs. "In fact, you could say they lost their heads over her."

In addition to adding to the story, the Imagineers are taking advantage of some technological advances since the Mansion first saw the light of day. You won't be overwhelmed with high-tech bells and whistles that disturb the eerie atmosphere, but, Kathy promises, "Imagineers constantly look for new ways to combine compelling stories with new technologies. As we've worked to enhance Haunted Mansion, we've added a few surprises that may make the ghosts seem a little closer than before."

So whether it's your first visit to the Mansion or your hundredth, when Guests are allowed to enter that elegant but eerie house again, keep your eyes peeled. You never know when you'll stumble across the evidence of a haunt you haven't encountered before! And remember -- there's always room for one more.

Disney Looks to Tech Marketing With Finding Nemo Subs and Pirates
    Jul 14, 2007

Orange County Business Journal - Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage is a glimpse of what the future may hold for Walt Disney Co.’s theme parks.

The submarine ride coordinates a soundtrack and animated characters in a semi-custom ride. It’s an achievement that leaves a lot of folks asking, “How do they do that?”

Disney has bumped up its efforts to bring technology to its parks, using it to cross-market its movies, rides, characters and retail products.

The idea is to create an endless loop of products designed to appeal to every age group and keep interest in older attractions.

This year, Pirate’s Lair at Tom Sawyer Island and Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage are draws at Anaheim’s Disneyland Park. The revamped rides are big on Disney’s cross-over marketing strategy.

They also play into the company’s bid to create “immersive experiences” that put people into Disney stories.

“We want to make our content and experiences more compelling,” Chief Executive Bob Iger said at a recent convention of journalists in Anaheim.

Disneyland’s foray into tech-driven rides started with Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters, which opened in Tomorrowland in 2005. Buzz Lightyear fans can play along at home against riders via the Internet.

The Nemo ride, three years in the making, uses what Disney Imagineers call a “traveling show system” that employs digital projection techniques.

“It’s one of the most challenging scenarios we’ve had,” said Tom Fitzgerald, executive vice president and senior creative executive for Walt Disney Imagineering.

Submarine Voyage makes use of the most popular characters from the film and creates a new story about yet another adventure with the frisky fish.

“It’s better than before and worth the wait,” said Marty Sklar, a former Disney creative executive who worked with Walt Disney and fought to keep the company from permanently scuttling the subs.

Disney does not disclose spending on individual rides. Others have estimated the cost for Nemo at around $100 million. The investment is part of an effort to incorporate more from Pixar Animation Studios Inc., which Disney bought last year.

The wait for the submarine ride averages a couple of hours, according to park spokesman Bob Tucker.

“That speaks volumes about the value of the attraction,” Tucker said.

The new version of the submarine ride, Disneyland President Ed Grier said, is in the category of the legendary E-ticket rides—the most popular rides at Disneyland in the days before all-inclusive ticketing.

“Along with Pirate’s Lair at Tom Sawyer Island, it enlivens sections of the park that had been somewhat dormant for several years,” he said.

The pirates theme has been a big hit for Disney, with the company’s move to turn the “Pirates of the Caribbean” ride into a series of movies that so far has generated more than $2.6 billion.

The ride—opened in 1967—first was designed by Walt Disney as a walk-through wax museum until lighting and audio advances led him to turn it into a ride. It consistently has been one of the most popular rides at Disneyland.

Last year, elements of the “Pirates” movies were added to the ride—well in advance of the third movie, “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End.”

The popularity of pirate movies led Disney Imagineers to look at changes for Tom Sawyer Island—an outpost in the midst of the Rivers of America reached by raft from New Orleans Square. The dated attraction had seen dwindling attendance for several years.

Imagineers found a Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn tale in which they stumble on pirates’ treasures while exploring on the Mississippi River—another sign of Disney’s bid to cross-market. The revamped island also is designed to lure gamers via a promotion with Nintendo Co.

Guests with a Nintendo DS and a copy of the “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End” video game can take part in a treasure hunt on the island. Players seek hot spots that enable them to download content through Labor Day.

“It’s reaching the generation (of guests) who grew up with the movie, not the ride,” said Eric Jacobson, senior vice president, creative development, for Walt Disney Imagineering.

The island, which previously had about 2,000 visitors each day, has been getting as many as 8,000 visitors since the makeover, Grier said.

Disney is looking to draw visitors into other attractions.

In Tomorrowland, the Jedi Academy puts visitors into the “Star Wars” story and gives them a chance to battle Darth Vader.

Grier said the program has bolstered ridership at Tomorrowland’s Star Tours.

“Guests are enthusiastic about the changes,” he said.

At New Orleans square, musicians interact with guests, tossing beads to the crowds—though minus the flashing common at Mardi Gras.

Next year, another interactive ride is set for Disney’s California Adventure: Toy Story Mania in the Paradise Pier section of the park.

The ride features carnival games manned by the “Toy Story 2” characters. Riders, wearing 3-D glasses and seated eight to a car, will shoot color-coded toy cannons at a variety of targets. If the target is a balloon, the cannon will shoot virtual darts. If it’s a piece of ham, the cannon will “toss” eggs.

“If you love Buzz Lightyear, you’ll go crazy over Toy Story,” Fitzgerald said.

WIN A STAY IN THE CASTLE THIS YEAR!
Spending a night in Disney World's Cinderella Suite By Travis Reed The Associated Press LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- I am in hundreds of strangers' vacation pictures -- the bewildered guy in the sputtering truck at the front of the Walt Disney World parade. I'm sitting next to Daisy Duck and wearing mouse ears embroidered with my name, waving like an idiot and smiling like I just won a toaster. That's the first place they put you when you've won an overnight stay in the three-room suite inside the Cinderella Castle. It's the crown jewel in Walt Disney Co.'s "Year of a Million Dreams" sweepstakes, the squeal-inducing fantasy of millions of little girls -- and my home for the next 17 hours. Each day, Disney randomly chooses one family to spend the night in its new Cinderella Suite, but I got to stay there thanks to an exclusive invitation from Disney to The Associated Press. (Families stay there for free, and the suite cannot be rented, but The AP paid $587 for my stay, which was the estimated value for the overnight.) Staying in the suite means I'm also grand marshal of the parade, the honorary guest in an event called the "Dreams Come True Dinner," created by Cinderella's Fairy Godmother, and the front-of-the-line guy at anything I want to ride. I am a tattooed 27-year-old guy with Buddy Holly glasses and no children. But I'm just not that into princesses. So to enhance my appreciation, I've adopted a family with two little girls (ages 5 and 2) to stay with me. I am tired of smiling and waving when the parade ends, and I wonder how the full-grown adults dressed up like Goofy and Minnie do it every single day. Besides that, what will become of all those pictures when they make it back to Iowa or Idaho or Kalamazoo? The Magic Kingdom is designed so you can see the castle from just about anywhere, and the walk to our suite seems longer than it should. We are led up a far pathway, past a side door and into a small room with stone walls. Our guide, dressed as a 17th century castle guy, swipes a card to call our elevator and takes us four stories up. The suite is brand new. The elevator is not, and moves eerily a few inches up and down when it's boarded or stopping. Each of us is given a swipe key with our name and "Cinderella Suite" written on it, and before long there are bite marks all over 2-year-old Emily's. Her sister Hannah has the honor of opening our door the first time. There are golden flecks in the floor and ornate squares on the ceiling, making the whole room feel gilded. The desk in the corner is a 17th century Dutch antique with velvet-lined shelves that Disney has retrofitted with a high-speed Internet hookup. There are two queen beds with headboards and a canopy and a fireplace that can't burn anything, but holds a fiberoptic display of flame and pixie dust. The television in the sitting room is a mirror that converts at the touch of a button, while the "royal bedchamber" TV changes from a framed
Cigar Bar Opens in Walt Disney World
    Jul 14, 2007

Cigar Insider - Cigar-smoking fathers dreading the family trip to Orlando have reason to rejoice: Walt Disney World now has its very own cigar bar.

Fuego by Sosa Cigars opened in June on Disney's Pleasure Island, the adult-oriented area of the iconic Florida theme park. Fuego sports a bar that looks like a slab of melting ice, seating for around 30 people and a complete selection of alcoholic beverages.

A smoky, boozy bar may seem like an odd fit for Disney, best known for smiling children, charming music and an image reminiscent of America in the 1950s. Smoking is prohibited throughout much of Walt Disney World, and since 2000 Disney has allowed smoking only in designated smoking areas. In the Magic Kingdom, for example, there are 14 designated smoking areas, including "the alcove behind the clock tower" in Adventureland.

Sosa Cigars is part of the Arturo Fuente Cigar Family, and the Sosas have run a cigar shop in Disney for the past decade called Sosa Family Cigars, which stocks 80 cigar brands, humidors and cigarettes. Sosa is the only spot in Disney where one can buy tobacco products.

October 2007 Disney Investing 1.1billion in DisneyLand.
Since its 2001 debut, the Walt Disney Co. theme park Disney's California Adventure has floundered in the shadow of its legendary neighbor, Disneyland. To fix it, Disney is now planning a $1.1 billion overhaul -- the most extensive makeover the company has ever given to a theme park.
Disney's board recently approved the investment, which will be poured into California Adventure over roughly five years, according to people familiar with the plan. The sum is particularly significant, considering the theme park cost around $1 billion to build and Disney has already spent more than $100 million trying to improve it.

Originally aimed at luring visitors to spend more time and money at the Disneyland Resort, California Adventure has been criticized as lacking Disney's trademark creative spark. The California theme has fallen flat with visitors from the western U.S., who make up the bulk of attendance. Last year, the park drew just under six million visitors, compared with nearly 15 million at Disneyland and short of Disney's original forecast of seven million visitors a year for the new park.

ANAHEIM, Calif., and LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. - Framed through the lens of renowned photographer Annie Leibovitz, more stars are playing out their fantasies, living out their Disney dreams.

Actress Rachel Weisz is Snow White, tennis star Roger Federer is King Arthur from "The Sword in the Stone" and actress Julie Andrews is the Blue Fairy from "Pinocchio" with actress Abigail Breslin as Fira from "Disney Fairies" in a new wave of celebrity images celebrating the "Year of a Million Dreams" at Disney Parks.

They join Scarlett Johansson as Cinderella, Beyoncé as "Alice in Wonderland" twirling in a teacup and David Beckham atop a steed as Prince Phillip from "Sleeping Beauty" in a 14-page insert appearing later this year in several Condé Nast publications. Johansson, Beyoncé and Beckham also starred in the first flight of Leibovitz images last January.

The new photographs, placing stars in classic Disney fairy tale settings, continue the "Disney Dream Portrait Series" of celebrity images produced by Leibovitz as Disney Parks announces an extension, through 2008, of its "Year of a Million Dreams" celebration.

Elaborate sets and costuming went into the transformation of Weisz, Andrews, Breslin and Federer. Soundstages morphed into pixie-dusted spectacles as Leibovitz clicked away.

"It's thrilling to have an opportunity to re-create the characters we all loved as children," Leibovitz says. "The stories are real to my own children now, and their belief inspires me."

Dreamlike images in a year of dreams was a natural, added Jay Rasulo, chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts.

"Putting celebrities right inside their fantasies reinforces the power of dreams, where anything is possible," he said. "Disney's ‘Year of a Million Dreams' is about the imaginations and dreams that are inside us all. Through the lens of Annie Leibovitz, these dreams and fantasies come alive. It's the perfect fit."

For Weisz, slipping on the familiar hair band and dress of Snow White was a dream come true. Her finished image, "Where You're the Fairest of Them All," is a soft, sylvan scene in which she is surrounded by forest friends.

"I think you always want to be Snow White, it's every little girl's dream," Weisz said.

Federer traded his tennis racket for a regal sword, posing on a rock as the gallant King Arthur.

The finished photo, entitled "Where You're Always King of the Court," shows Federer, red cape flowing, beside a roiling sea.

In another photo, Breslin as Fira (from the "Disney Fairies" series) reposes on a giant leaf while the wand-waving Julie Andrews as the Blue Fairy of "Pinocchio" showers her with pixie dust. "Where the Magic Begins," reads the photo.

The special insert will be unveiled in the December editions of Cookie, Condé Nast Traveler, Details, Glamour, GQ, Men's Vogue, New Yorker, Self, Vanity Fair, Vogue and W.

On Oct. 1, Disney announced its "Year of a Million Dreams" celebration would be extended throughout 2008 at Disneyland Resort in California and Walt Disney World Resort in Florida. The celebration is filled with new attractions and entertainment plus more "dream-come-true" moments for guests than ever before.
