House Speaker Pelosi in Saudi Arabia after meeting Syria's Assad
Apr 05, 2007 11:04:07
RIYADH, Saudi Arabia House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is in Saudi Arabia today as part of her Mideast tour. The San Francisco Democrat is meeting with several members of Saudi Arabia's Shura Council, an unelected advisory assembly appointed by the king. Yesterday, Pelosi met with King Abdullah (ab-DUHL'-uh). During their meeting, Pelosi says she didn't discuss his recent criticism of the U-S occupation of Iraq, but instead praised the king's Mideast peace initiative. Pelosi arrived in Saudi Arabia after a stop in Syria. She's the highest-ranking American politician to visit Syria since relations began to deteriorate in 2003. Pelosi has been criticized by the White House about the stop in Syria, which the U-S accuses of sponsoring terrorism and refuses to have direct contact with. AP
