NEW YORK (Reuters) - David Ortiz smacked two home runs and Curt Schilling pitched seven strong innings as the visiting Boston Red Sox topped the texas Rangers 3-2 on Sunday.Ortiz hit a solo homer in the first inning and then broke a 1-1 tie with a two-run blast to right-center field in the third inning.
The hits enabled Ortiz to break out of a 2-for-18 batting slump as Boston avoided a sweep by the Rangers.
Schilling, who lost on opening day, was more effective this time.
The 40-year-old right-hander allowed just four hits and a run while striking out six. He retired the last 10 batters he faced.
Frank Catalanotto scored the only run off Schilling with a first inning homer.
Vicente Padilla took the loss, his second straight.
Texas loaded the bases against reliever Joel Pineiro in the eighth inning but could only score one run.
With Javier Lopez on the mound, Nelson Cruz grounded into a fielder's choice that allowed Gerald Laird to score.
Jonathan Papelbon, the third Boston pitcher in the inning, then retired the next two batters.
"We had everything lined up perfectly," Rangers manager Ron Washington told reporters after the game. "Give Papelbon some credit. He was lights out."
