Konya to host conference on local media

Tuesday, November 28, 2006 The Directorate-General of Press and Information has announced plans to organize a conference bringing together approximately 200 members of the press on Nov 30 and Dec. 1 in the central Anatolian city of Konya ANKARA - Turkish Daily News The Directorate-General of Press and Information will hold a conference for press members in Konya on Nov. 30-Dec. 1, a statement released by the Directorate-General said on Monday. The 13th Local Media Training Seminar is being organized in cooperation with the Konya Governor's Office and the Konya Journalists' Association for press members working in the cities of Konya, Karaman, Kırıkkale, Eskişehir, Kütahya and Antalya at the Dündar Hotel in the city of Konya. About 200 members of the press are expected to participate in the conference. Opening speeches will be delivered by Konya Governor A. Atilla Osmançelebioğlu, Konya Mayor Tahir Akyürek, Deputy General Director of the General Directorate of Press and Information Salih Melek, Head of the Konya Journalists' Association Sefa Özdemir and head of the Journalists' Association as well as the Turkey Federation of Journalists Nazmi Bilgin. Leading journalists from the Turkey Journalists' Association, the Anatolia news agency as well as bureaucrats from the Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK), the Directorate-General of Press and Information and academics from various universities will deliver presentations during the two-day conference. In addition, foreign press representatives including China International Radio's Zhiwei Mo, Russia's Voice representative Anatoly Koritskiy and Turkish Cypriot daily Voice of the People's Ankara representative Oktay Öksüzoğlu will also share their views during the conference. The conference will include discussions on 15 topics including agency journalism, the RTÜK law and its enforcement, local media and democracy, local press and official adds, problems of the local media, changes in the communications sector, the structure of local press in Turkey, the representation of Anatolia in the national press, freedom of press, news story writing, TV journalism, photo-journalism, media and ethics and interview techniques. The conference will also host a photo-exhibition featuring photographs of Atatürk to mark his 125th birth anniversary. Source: Turkish Daily News
