The origins of Chateau-Richer
Oct 16, 2007 15:59:28
A trip to the Chateau de Beaupre The name Chateau-Richer appears for the first time on a map drawn by Jean Bourdon, in 1641, of the region from Quebec City to Cap Tourmente. We see this name opposite a cape or bluff located next to the bank of the Saint-Lawrence River, where in later years was built a presbytery and manor house for the seigneury. In a contract dated February 20, 1662, the name of Chateau-Richer was used unequivocally to name this bluff. The church elders of the "Church of our Lady of Good News of Chasteau-Richer" (Nostre Dame de Bonne Nouvelle de Chasteau Richer) granted a site to a surgeon Claude Petiot "in the lowland having on one side the bluff commonly called Chasteau-Richer". The choice of this site by the early lords of Beaupre to establish an administrative and judiciary centre for their seigneury was not an accident. From the top of the bluff, we can see the entire shoreline (côte) of Beaupre and follow the course of the Saint-Lawrence River all the way to Cap Tourmente. It was here that they gradually established the cluster of buildings that formed the village which, following the custom of the time, was called the location and town site of Chateau-Richer. In a legal document dated October 31, 1660, the notary (a notary is a lawyer specialized in contract law) Auber mentioned "the town site or village established in this locality". By extension, the name of Chateau-Richer was given to the area that later formed the parish and then the municipality of ChÃteau-Richer. In fact, ancient deeds and contracts concerning lands granted to inhabitants located at some distance from the village mentioned that they "were near Chasteau-Richer".
