Alexei Morozov scored midway through the third period to give Ak Bars Kazan a 1-0 victory over Lokomotiv Yaroslavl to win the inaugural Gagarin Cup in Game 7 of the Russia-based Continental Hockey League final.
Ak Bars had trailed Lokomotiv throughout the series before pulling even with a 3-2 overtime win in game six on Friday in Yaroslavl, setting up a decisive showdown on the 48th anniversary of Yuri Gagarin becoming the first man in space.
Former Pittsburgh Penguins forward Morozov scored the only goal of the match off a rebound at 50:04.
"It was a tough playoff series of the evenly matched teams," Ak Bars coach Zinatula Billyaletdinov said. "We levelled the series and scored a decisive goal today to win."
