Spears
to open MTV Video Music Awards
NEW YORK (AP) — It's Britney, baby, one more time. Despite her train-wreck performance at the MTV Video Music Awards last year, the network confirms Spears will kick off the show once again.
But it won't be a performance. Instead, MTV Networks Music Group President Van Toffler said Wednesday, it'll be something "fun and unexpected" on Sunday night's show.
Unexpected is probably the kindest way to describe Spears' performance at last year's VMAs. In what was heavily promoted as the troubled singer's comeback, she instead gave an unfocused, almost unwatchable performance of "Gimme More," one of the many low points in her year of debacles.

LOS ANGELES - Britney Spears and a parenting coach were questioned Tuesday by the court commissioner overseeing the singer's custody
dispute, resulting in an unspecified change in visitation status.
Spears and ex-husband Kevin Federline appeared before Commissioner Scott Gordon, who took the one-hour proceeding behind closed doors.
Court spokesman Allan Parachini stressed afterward that the answers given by Spears and parenting coach Lisa Hacker were not considered testimony.
Spears' behavior was "very businesslike," Parachini said.
The 26-year-old pop princess, wearing a white short-sleeve top and capri pants with pockets down the sides, left court without comment. Federline, in a gray suit, also did not comment as he left.
Months of bizarre behavior by Spears culminated early this year with two hospitalizations. Federline was given full custody of their two little boys, Sean Preston and Jayden James, and Spears' visitation rights were suspended.

But Spears has appeared stable recently, and her visitation rights have been gradually restored. She remains under the conservatorship of her father, James Spears, and her estate is under the conservatorship of her father and an attorney.

Monday, 23 June 2008
Britney Spears almost burst into tears on Friday after a clash between her bodyguard and a photographer turned ugly.
The Gimme More singer was greeted at LAX Airport by a huge crowd of paparazzi as she arrived back in California following her brief trip to Louisiana to help her sister Jamie Lynn give birth.
More than thirty snappers swarmed around her vehicle as she attempted to make her getaway outside the arrivals terminal.
The media scrum soon turned aggressive and her bodyguard was forced to step in to keep the photographers at bay, as a clearly upset Spears kept her head down.
?However, a fight nearly broke out when the bodyguard pushed a camera into a snapper's face, according to Airport Police Sergeant Jim Holcomb.
The photographer escaped unscathed, and has chosen not to file charges against Spears' employee.
?
?Meanwhile, the biographer who tricked Britney into thinking he was a photographer has revealed that Britney thinks she will die in the next six months.
Amid all the claims of drug abuse, bipolar problems and suicidal tendencies, Ian Halperin states Spears told him personally she fears she will die at 27.
The biographer, who ironically penned a book about Kurt Cobain - who lost his life at 27, tells Life & Style magazine, "She told me she feared she'd die at age 27 (her current age), just like other music stars, like Janis Joplin and Kurt Cobain."
Joplin and Cobain aren't the only members of the sinister 27 Club - rock greats Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison and Brian Jones all perished before their 28th birthday
Britney Is 'Really Shaping Up'
Britney Spears
Britney Spears is back in the recording studio with J.R. Rotem and Sean Garrett, the producers confirm to PEOPLE.
"She's great," Rotem told PEOPLE at the BMI Pop Awards in Beverly Hills on Tuesday. "She's like a master at what she does. She's a lot more experienced than most people. She just has the 'it' factor that not every artist has. So it's always nice to work with her."
Although Rotem, who briefly dated Spears in 2007, would not reveal any details of the project, a Spears family source tells PEOPLE that the pop star is in the early stages of a follow-up to her last album
Blackout, which was released last October.
"Britney is in the experimental stages of a new album," says the source. "She's trying to find the sound and direction she wants to go in, but nothing is set in stone just yet. She has been playing the piano a lot and just singing. She says she misses 'just singing.'"
Producer Sean Garrett was mum on specifics but says that he and Spears, 26, have "a few things in the works." At the BMI Pop Awards, Garrett told PEOPLE: "I'm just happy to see her back and recovering. She's really shaping up and getting her whole situation back together. I'm really proud and happy to see her."
A rep for Spears's record label had no comment.More than any other single artist,
Britney Spears was the driving force behind the return of teen pop in the late '90s. The blockbuster success of
the Spice Girls and
Backstreet Boys certainly paved the way for her own commercial breakthrough, but
Spears didn't just become a star -- she was a bona fide pop phenomenon. Not only did she sell millions of records, she was a media fixture regardless of what she was (or wasn't) doing; among female singers of the era (many of whom followed in her footsteps), her celebrity star power was rivaled only by
Jennifer Lopez. From the outset,
Spears' sex appeal was an important part of her image; the video for her debut single, "...Baby One More Time," outfitted her in full Catholic-school regalia, and sent her well on the way to becoming an international sex symbol. Yet
Spears' handlers seemed to be trying to have it both ways -- there was a definite tension between the wholesome innocence
Spears tried to project for her female audience, and the titillating sexuality that enticed so many male fans. Those marketing tactics made
Spears a somewhat controversial figure, the subject of endless debates concerning appropriate role models for teenage girls. Early on,
Spears tried to defuse the controversy by preaching abstinence until marriage, and even denied that she was consciously cultivating such a sexualized image. Of course, the more provocative and revealing her on-stage wardrobe became, the less plausible that claim seemed. But apart from her ability to tiptoe the line between virginal coquette and brazen tart,
Spears had a secret weapon in Swedish pop mastermind
Max Martin, who had a hand in the vast majority of her hits as a writer and/or producer. With
Martin crafting the sort of contemporary dance-pop and sentimental ballads that made stars of
the Backstreet Boys,
Spears kept on delivering the goods commercially, as her first three albums all topped the charts.
Britney Spears? was born December 2, 1981, in the small town of Kentwood, LA, and began performing as a singer and dancer at a young age. With a nationally televised appearance on Star Search already under her belt, Spears auditioned for the Disney Channel's The New Mickey Mouse Club at age eight. The producers turned her down as too young, but one of them took an interest and introduced her to an agent in New York. Spears spent the next three years studying at the Professional Performing Arts School, and also appeared in several television commercials and off-Broadway plays. At 11, she returned to The New Mickey Mouse Club for a second audition, and this time made the cut. Although her fellow Mouseketeers included an impressive array of future stars -- *NSYNC's Justin Timberlake and JC Chasez, Christina Aguilera, and Felicity actress Keri Russell -- the show was canceled after Spears' second season. She returned to New York at age 15 and set about auditioning for pop bands and recording demo tapes, one of which eventually landed her a deal with Jive Records.
Spears entered the studio with top writer/producers like Eric Foster White (Boyzone, Whitney Houston, Backstreet Boys) and Max Martin (Ace of Base, Backstreet Boys, *NSYNC). In late 1998, Jive released her debut single, the Martin-penned "...Baby One More Time." Powered by its video, in which Spears and a troupe of dancers were dressed as Catholic-school jailbait, the single shot to the top of the Billboard charts. When Spears' debut album of the same title was released in early 1999, it entered the charts at number one and stayed there for six weeks. Once the ubiquitous lead single died down, the album kept spinning off hits: the Top Ten "(You Drive Me) Crazy," the near-Top 20 ballad "Sometimes," and the Top 20 "From the Bottom of My Broken Heart." By the end of 1999, ...Baby One More Time had sold ten million copies, and went on to sell a good three million more on top of that. Its success touched off a wave of young pop divas that included Christina Aguilera, Pink, Jessica Simpson, and Mandy Moore. Spears was a superstar, drooled over in countless magazines, including a Rolling Stone cover that prompted immediate speculation about the still-17 year old having gotten breast implants.
By the time ...Baby One More Time finally started to lose steam on the singles and album charts, Spears was ready to release her follow-up. Oops!...I Did It Again appeared in the spring of 2000, and the title track was an instant smash, racing into the Top Ten. The album entered the charts at number one and sold over a million copies in its first week of release, setting a new record for single-week sales by a female artist.

Britney Spears & Mel Gibson Head To Costa Rica
LOS ANGELES, Calif. --
Britney Spears and Mel Gibson are headed to Costa Rica together, Access Hollywood has confirmed.
The new celebrity pals departed from Bob Hope Airport in Burbank, Calif., on Thursday morning.
Back in March, the two were spotted having dinner together at the Russian restaurant, Romanov, in Studio City.
According to a report in People, a source said the two are “just going away for a few days to relax.”
It is believed they will be staying at Gibson’s home in Costa Rica.
Britney and Mel used to be neighbors in Malibu
Britney Lets It All Hang Out in Costa Rica

Britney Spears is down in Central America -- with Mel Gibson, mind you -- horsing around the beaches of Costa Rica. Custody battles, foreign accents and 5150 holds must feel like a lifetime ago!LOOKS LIKE SHE IS CARRYING MEL'S BABY...TWINS
Britney's face was lit up yesterday during a special visit with her boys. Jayden James rested in his mommy's arms during their supervised quality time at her home. She also spent the day reading a self-help book called Key to Living the Law of Attraction: A Simple Guide to Creating the Life of Your Dreams by Jack Canfield, the man who brought us the popular Chicken Soup for the Soul series. Brit also took over a Bally's aerobics room but there was a little hiccup. The room already had people in it so the gym booted them out so Ms. Brit could have the room to herself. Maybe the book is working if she has the to power to clear out a gym room so quickly.

Britney Spears Does The Unthinkable: Looks Gorgeous, Laughs, And Dates A Normal Human Being [Comebacks]
There’s nothing better than returning from a long weekend to discover not one but two incredibly positive stories about Britney Spears. Not only has the singer finally managed to make a public appearance looking downright hot, but she’s also begun dating a very eligible, scandal-free bachelor — William Morris agent Jason Trawick. As you may recall, Trawick was the mystery man splashing around Mel Gibson’s Costa Rica retreat with Britney last week, and reportedly has been looking after Britney ever since the beginning of her American Tragedy downfall. As a source tells OK!, “Britney totally trusts him and she has very deep feelings for him. It’s now got to the point where Britney wants to be with him full time.” And after seeing these pictures of the pair, who went public at an Ed Hardy party over the weekend, we can’t help but notice a very sober-looking Britney appearing genuinely happy for the first time in...ever:
?
Surprisingly and delightfully, Splash News has the best details on how the alleged new couple behaved at the party:
She wore a tight sexy black dress, Louboutin heels and a bright red lipstick. Britney seemed relaxed and happy and laughed as she and Jason shared some jokes. The pair seemed very comfortable together. They sat in a private VIP booth, stayed for 1/2 hour, Britney took a cigarette break and her father seemed to be happy with his daughter having a great time with Jason.
Britney in Louboutins? Where have her beloved glued-on cowboy kickers run off to? Maybe they'll be her wedding present to Juno Lynn? But, we have to say, our favorite tidbit from this story is the fact that "Britney took a cigarette break" and "her father seemed to be happy" are in the same sentence. It's times like these when, for just a split second, we kind of wish Jamie Spears was our dad too.

Britney Spears looks "hot and blonde" in her cameo appearance in the Pussycat Dolls’ new video
The troubled singer – who has been working hard to get back on track following her alleged breakdown earlier this year – shot her scenes for the girl group’s latest track ‘When I Grow Up’ in California on Wednesday
?
Britney Spears hasn't looked this happy in a long time. A court has ordered Britney's father's guardianship over her to be extended by five months.
A set source said: "It was carefully planned out. "In the scene shot, Britney is driving in a car. They all wave at each other as they are passing in traffic - that is it. It is genius and you will love it! Of course, Britney looks hot and blonde."
The Pussycat Dolls filmed the part of the scene in a blue convertible Chevy Imapla. The insider added: "They are singing and in traffic - looking hot. It is a very short sequence, but Britney had a lot of fun with it. Britney really likes the Dolls' music and when she saw them on the MTV Movie Awards at the weekend, she was totally down to do the video." This is not the first time mother-of-two Britney has teamed up with the group. She once appeared with the Pussycat Dolls as part of a special performance for her older brother Bryan’s birthday
