Aishwarya Rai

Aishwarya Rai, also known as Ash or Aish, is an Indian actress,  and former fashion model. Aishwarya Rai was awarded the Miss World title in 1994. Aishwarya Rai has acted in Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Bengali and English films. Aishwarya Rai has received a number of awards. Aishwarya Rai has worked with a number of actors.

Early life:
Aishwarya Rai was born in Mangalore, in the South Indian state of Karnataka, to Krishnaraj Rai, a marine engineer, and Vrinda Rai, a writer. She hails from the Tulu speaking Bunt community of Mangalore. she studied in Hyderabad until 7th grade. Her family later relocated to Mumbai. Rai has one brother, Aditya Rai, who is three years older than she is. Aditya is in the merchant navy, and has also co-produced a film with Rai in the lead.Her native language is Tulu, however, she also speaks Hindi, Marathi, English and a bit of Tamil as well. Attended the Arya Vidya Mandir at Santacruz, Mumbai, then entered Ruparel College, Matunga, Mumbai. She was an A student and was on track to become an architect.

 Rai began modeling on the side while studying architecture. She was a contestant in the Miss India 1994 pageant, which she lost to Sushmita Sen but later went on to win the Miss World title that same year.

 Professional Career:
Aishwarya Rai debuted in Mani Ratnam's critically acclaimed Tamil language film, Iruvar with Mohanlal and Tabu. She played a double-role in the film. she was introduced to Bollywood by Rahul Rawail in the film, Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya; the film was a poor performer at the box office. However, her third project, a Tamil-language film, Jeans by S. Shankar was a critical success. She then appeared in popular films Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999) and Mohabbatein (2000). In 2002, Rai appeared with superstars Shah Rukh Khan and Madhuri Dixit in the lavishly produced Devdas, which was a major box-office success. The film attracted overseas attention as well, receiving a special screening at the Cannes Film Festival and garnering international attention.

 Her next overseas venture, Mistress of Spices, from the novel by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni and directed by Berges, was released in the U.K. in April 2006 but turned out to be a flop everywhere. Her recent release is Dhoom 2, a sequel to the 2004 hit Dhoom in which She plays a villain for the first time since Khakee. The film released on November 24 2006 and has been extremely successful so far. A kissing scene from a movie starring Aishwarya Rai and Hrithik Roshan has irked a lawyer who has filed a criminal case against them, accusing them of obscenity, in the movie 'Dhoom 2'

 Personal Life:
Rai began dating Salman Khan, her co-star from Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, after the filming of that movie. Their breakup a few years later generated a substantial amount of press attention. Rai has also been linked to her co-star Vivek Oberoi in the past. Recently, much media attention has focused on Aishwarya's alleged romantic involvement with fellow Bollywood celebrity Abhishek Bachchan. Recently, She was spotted with Amitabh Bachchan and family at Kasi Vishwanath temple for conducting manglic pooja for a good married life.

In 2002, Rai appeared alongside Shahrukh Khan and Madhuri Dixit in Sanjay Leela Bansali's lavishly produced Devdas. The film attracted overseas attention as well, receiving a special screening at the Cannes Film Festival. It was during this time that She garnered the attention of the West as an Indian actress and went on to appear in a few Hollywood projects. Devdas went on to become the highest grossing film of the year both in India and overseas, earning the actress her second Filmfare best Actress Award.

As her name gained popularity overseas, She was chosen by time magazine in 2004 as one of the World's "100 Most Influential People", and appeared on the cover of Time magazine, Asia Edition  in 2003. she was the subject of a 60 Minutes profile on January 2. A month later she appeared on the Late Show with David Letterman. She also featured on Oprah's "Women Across the Globe" segment. In 2003, she acted in the critically acclaimed and commercial success Bengali film, Chokher Bali, an adaptation of one of Rabindranath Tagore's novels by the same name.

Rai has been a regular at the Cannes Film Festival since 2002, and was a member of the Jury at Cannes in the year 2003. In October 2004, a wax figure of Rai became on display in London's Madame Tussaud's wax museum. The same month, her first foreign film, Bride and Prejudice released. The film was an Indian version of Jane Austen's classic novel Pride and Prejudice. Her next overseas venture was The Mistress of Spices. She then appeared at the closing ceremony of the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, as part of a performance showcasing Indian art, on behalf of the 2010 Commonwealth Games, to be held in New Delhi. In between her overseas acting stints, she appeared in the Indian film Bunty Aur Babli in a hugely popular seven minute dance sequence for the song "Kajra Re".

In 2005, Rai signed a three-year contract with L'Oréal, as a spokesmodel for the cosmetics company. At the end of the year 2006, She had two releases: Umrao Jaan and Dhoom 2. While the former did poorly in India, her role in the latter, which was a sequel to the 2004 hit movie Dhoom brought her great attention. The film went on to become the biggest hit of the year, and sparked a controversy for a scene containing a kiss between her and Hrithik Roshan. For her performance, she received nominations for best Actress at a number of award ceremonies, including Filmfare.

2007 saw the release of Mani Ratnam's Guru which premiered in Toronto. The film, based on the life of Indian businessman Dhirubhai Ambani, was critically acclaimed and did well at the box office. Her most recent film, Provoked, based on the book "Circle of Light" where She portrays a real life character, was released on April 6, 2007 in India and the UK. The biographical movie portrays the life of Kiranjit Ahluwalia who faced severe domestic violence. The movie won Aishwarya a lot of critical acclaim. At the end of April 2007, her first American film, The Last Legion released in Russia and the Netherlands and later opened in North American theaters in August 2007 disappointingly. In 2008 She starred alongside Hrithik Roshan in Ashutosh Gowariker's historical drama Jodhaa Akbar. She played the role of Jodha Bai, the wife of the Mughal emperor Jalaluddin Muhammad Akbar, played by Roshan. Aishwarya has appearing in Sarkar Raj very recently which costars husband Abhishek Bachchan and father-in-law Amitabh Bachchan.
