Miley Stewart has had the best of both worlds, but both come crashing down during the course of, Hannah Montana: The Movie. Based on the popular Disney Channel series that features Miley Cyrus as regular brunette schoolgirl Stewart by day and blonde pop princess Hannah Montana by night, the film explores the pressures of a dual personality reaching critical mass.
Miley is letting pop stardom go to her head, causing her to wreck the Sweet Sixteen birthday bash of best friend Lilly (Emily Osment), miss her brother Jacksons (Jason Earles) college send-off and get into a well-publicized mall catfight with former supermodel Tyra Banks over a pair of shoes. Hannahs publicist (Vanessa Williams) books her for a New York appearance, but her father Robbie (Billy Ray Cyrus) detours the flight to rural Crowley Corners for Grandma Rubys (Margo Martindale) birthday instead.
The troubled teen is not too pleased with this turn of events and hops out of the old pickup truck (not the limo she was expecting) on the back roads in defiance. After getting reacquainted with her childhood horse and meeting cute ranch hand Travis Brody (Lucas Till), she arrives at the farm house to meet the family, who are gathered in the living room singing and jamming… with Rascal Flatts.
Needless to say, this is where suspension of disbelief engages full-throttle. And when Taylor Swift shows up in this middle-of-nowhere neighborhood to perform at a fundraiser to thwart a sleazy land developer (Barry Bostwick), the journey is complete.
While the plot is completely a fantasy scenario, lessons about simplicity and being true to yourself are easily digested. Beyond the inner conflict, an outward threat looms over all in the form of a tabloid reporter (Peter Gunn) bent on discovering Hannah Montanas secret identity. The films resolution was a golden opportunity wasted and a bit of a cop-out. Let’s just say it ends the same way every Star Trek novel concludes, with major characters unchanged.

Hannah Montana: Miley Cyrus Does Make Mistakes
Okay, she reasons out that she’s 16 and not perfect, so we really shouldn’t expect so much from her being the role model of millions of girls worldwide. On her appearance on The Today Show, Miley Cyrus tried to clear up her reputation and told her fans that being in the public eye is difficult when you’re human. Humongously famous, yes, but still human.
Miley performed at New York’s Rockefeller Plaza last week, singing some of her hits like “Party in the U.S.A.” and “The Climb.” She then discussed what plans she had for her already-successful career.
“I want to be able to step out and maybe take a break for a while and write music that inspires me,” the Hannah Montana star said. “I think there’s always a formula … I think the best way to do that is put it out of the way and do something new.”
She also talked about her upcoming movie. “It’s gonna be crazy ‘cause in January, that’s when ‘The Last Song’ comes out, so that’s going to be kind of rad and kind of dark and kind of a drama. And [then I] go back to ‘Hannah Montana.’ It’s going to be great!”
As for being in the public eye, she added that she’s still bound to make mistakes. Don’t we know it. “I’m not here to say I’m perfect ‘cause I’m far from it,” Cyrus admitted. “My mistakes are kind of a little bit harder because they are in front of millions and millions of people. It’s hard sometimes to smile about it, but it also makes you want to try harder the next time.”
The thing is, the mistakes she’s making aren’t exactly the kind any other teenager would be caught up in. Still, she’ll apologize for whatever she did and the public will accept it, just because she’s Miley Cyrus. Normal 16-year-olds can’t pull that off, which is why people expect more from this girl.
Anyway, MTV News reports that she’s due for another appearance on the new Jay Leno Show on September 16. Well, she’ll probably start talking about her mistakes again and we’ll hear the same old excuses. As Miley implies, let’s not expect too much from her then.
