Having successfully re-introduced a number of their Golden Age superhero characters (Flash, Green Lantern, etc.) during the late 1950s, DC Comics asked writer Gardner Fox to re-introduce the JusticeSociety of America. Fox, influenced by the popularity of the National Football League and Major League Baseball, decided to change the name of the team from Justice Society to Justice League. The Justice League of America debuted in The Brave and the Bold #28 (1960), and quickly became one of the company’s best-selling titles. Fox wrote virtually all of the League’s adventures during the 1960s, and artist Mike Sekowsky pencilled the first five years.
As with the JusticeSociety, the concept of the Justice League was simple: to include all of DC’s most popularcharacters in one book (hence the original lineup included Superman, Batman, Aquaman, Flash, Green Lantern, Martian Manhunter and Wonder Woman). Three of DC’s other surviving or revived characters, Green Arrow, Atom, and Hawkman were quickly added to the roster, the latter two having been re-introduced by Gardner Fox himself. JLA’s earlysuccess was indirectly responsible for the creation of the Fantastic Four. In his autobiography Stan Lee relates how, during a round of golf, DC publisher Jack Liebowitz mentioned to Marvel-Timely owner MartinGoodman how well DC’s new book (Justice League) was selling. Later that day Goodman told Lee to come up with a team of superheroes for Marvel; Lee and Jack Kirby produced the Fantastic four.
The Justice League operated from a secret cave outside of the small town of HappyHarbor, Rhode Island. Teenager Snapper Carr tagged along on missions, and was both the team’s mascot and an official member. Snapper, noted for speaking in beatnik dialect and snapping his fingers, helped the League to defeat Giantspace starfish Starro the Conqueror in the team’s first appearance. In Justice League of America #77 (December 1969), Snapper was tricked into betraying the cave headquarters’ secret location to the Joker, resulting in his resignation from the team. His resignation followed the resignations of two of the league’s original members, Wonder Woman (in Justice League of America #69) and J’onn J’onzz (in Justice League of America #71).
The Brave and the Bold is the title shared by many comic book series published by DC Comics. It was first published as an ongoing series from 1955 to 1983, then two mini-series in 1991 and in 1999, and was finally revived as an ongoing in 2007.
The focus of each version of the comic has varied over time but most commonly (and currently) features team-ups of characters from across the DC Universe.
But with issue #25, the series got reinvented as a try-out title for new characters and concepts. Each were tried out in three issues at a time. The first in issues #25-27 was the Suicide Squad, following by the Justice League of America from issues #28-30, leading to the title of the same name and the team becoming DC’s well-known superhero team. Other characters and teams that became well-known thanks to the book were Metamorpho, Nemesis, and the teen Titans, among others.
But then in issue #50, the series got reinvented again as a venue for team-ups between established characters. But, first in issues #67-71, and then #74 followed, random team-ups were replaced by Batman team-ups. Thus, yet again, the title was revented as a Batman team-up, with Batman as the main star of the book, and that stayed ‘til the title’s end with issue #200. While the reasons behind this move are unclear, the cover dates for the issues that started this reinvention seem to indicate that this started thanks to the Batman television series that was gaining popularity at the time.
Other than being a Batman team-up book, the title is also known for the first to feature Neal Adams’ version of Batman, generating fan interest that led to his style becoming the then-modern, or currently modern, Batman image. The final issue featured the then-latest new superhero team that happened to be Batman’s own superhero team; Batman and the Outsiders.
In December 1991-June 1992, The Brave and the Bold returned as a 6 part mini-series featuring Green Arrow, The Question, and the Butcher. The mini-series was written by Mike Grell.
Then in October 1999- March 2000, a second 6 part mini-series was published starring The Flash and Green Lantern titled Flash and GreenLantern: The Brave and the Bold. This mini-series was written by Mark Waid and Tom Peyer with art by BarryKitson and Tom Grindberg. A trade paperback of this mini-series was published in 2001 (ISBN 1563897083).
The title was used again in 2001 for The Brave and the Bold Annual No. 1 1969 Issue, a one-shot special that reprinted selected Silver Age team-ups in the 1960s-style 80-Page Giantformat, as a companion piece to the original comic book series, had an Annual issue been published at that time.
Volume 2
After years of fan interest since the cancellation of the first volume, DC resurrected the Brave and the Bold title as a second volume on-going series in April 2007. Deciding that it would be a random team-up book and not a Batman team-up book, the first writer was Mark Waid, who remained on the title from its first issue to its sixteenth. While the first arc involved Batman, in a team-up with Green Lantern: HalJordan, the Story had the two team-up with various others characters as well. Other characters included the likes of Supergirl, Lobo, Blue Beetle, and the Legion of Super Heroes. The second arc picked up threads from the first arc, but mainly focussed on self-contained stories.
After Waid’s departure, Marv Wolfman took over for only a two part storyline, while David Hine and Doug Braithwaite are currently doing a Four issue arc on the book featuring HalJordan and Phantom Stranger. Announced at WonderCon: writer J. Michael Straczynski, or JMS for short, will take over the book with Jesus Saiz on art. Straczynski will be using his run on the title to fully integrate various Archie Comics (specifically those under the RedCircle Comics banner) superheroes into the main DC Universe.
In 2005 an archive edition, The Brave and the Bold Team-Ups Archive, was published containing the first ‘team-up’ issues. Other issues have appeared in the following Collections:

Then in 2007, DC Comics started releasing hardcovers of the current Brave and the Bold series. Volume 1 was released on December 5, 2007, Volume 2 was released on August 5, 2008, and Volume 3 will be released in March 2009.
Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe (commonly abbreviated as MK vs. DCU or just MK vs. DC) is a crossover fighting game from Midway Games in the Mortal Kombat series, which was released on November 16, 2008. The game contains characters from both the Mortal Kombat franchise and the DC Comics Universe. The game’s Story was written by comic writers Jimmy Palmiotti and JustinGray. The game was developed using Epicgames’ Unreal Engine 3 and is available for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 platforms.
Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe does not follow chronologically with the other games in the Mortal Kombat series, and was considered an “ultimate-Elseworlds” for DC Comics continuity by Story co-writer Jimmy Palmiotti.
After Shao Kahn’s invasion of Earthrealm is defeated by Raiden’s forces of light, Raiden destroys Kahn by blasting him through a portal. At the same time on Earth, Superman is seen stopping an Apokoliptian invasion led by Darkseid by blasting the Apokoliptian fascist as he enters a Boomtube. These acts do not destroy either of them, but merges them into Dark Kahn, and causes the DC and Mortal Kombat universes to merge.
As the worlds merge, the characters’ abilities fluctuate, causing violent “rage” outbreaks that are actually the feelings of Dark Kahn being fused into the characters from afar. Because of this, certain characters either gain strength or vulnerability (allowing a character like Superman the possibility of being defeated due to his vulnerability to magic, and a character like the Joker the ability to fight Raiden). With each world thinking that the other is responsible for the merger (or a potential invasion), they fight each other in Mortal Kombat until only two remain: Raiden and Superman. In the final battle, Raiden and Superman fight while Dark Kahn feeds off of their rage. Both realizing that the other isn’t working with Dark Kahn, they overcome their rage for each other and defeat their fused enemy, restoring the two worlds to their normal separation. While everyone else has been sent to their original universe, Darkseid and Shao Kahn have been switched and faceeternal imprisonment in the others universe. Darkseid being restrained in the “Nether Realm”, while Shao Kahn is trapped in the PhantomZone.

At the dawn of the new heroic age, five heroes worked together on a case and decided to continue working as a team. Calling themselves the Justice League of America, in homage to the JusticeSociety of yesteryear, Aquaman, Black Canary, The Flash, Green Lantern (HalJordan) and the Martian Manhunter soon became friends and the darlings of the media. Defeating numerous attempts at world domination, sometimes with the help of their ‘mascot’ Snapper Carr, the League soon gained new members in the Atom and Green Arrow. When the Justice Society came out of retirement, partly because they were worried about the League, Society members Hawkman and Hawkgirl joined the Justice League as liaisons between the teams.
Over the years, the membership of the League expanded to include Batman, Firestorm, RedTornado, Zatanna and ‘the worldfamous Elongated Man’ until it became unwieldy. current League chairman Aquaman cut the League down to only those members prepared to make a full-time commitment to the group, moving headquarters from a satellite to Detroit. Aquaman, Elongated Man, Martian Manhunter and Zatanna took Four newer heroes under their wings in this period: Gypsy, Steel, Vibe and Vixen. Shortly afterwards, the League came under attack from Professor Ivo, who killed Steel and Vibe, leaving the team in disarray, disbanding soon afterwards.
