  The State of Hawaii
Settled by Polynesians: A.D. 300 - 700
Statehood: 1959, 50th State
Nickname: The Aloha State
Capital: Honolulu
State flower: Yellow hibiscus, pua ma o hau hele
State Fish: Triggerfish, Humuhumunukunukuapua'a
State Tree: Candlenut, kukui

Honolulu —  Everyone thought the humuhumunukunukuapuaa was Hawaii's state Fish. As it turns out, the brightly colored fish with the excessively long name has been dethroned.

The news shook the world of Rep. Blake Oshiro, who found out the designation was no longer official from Joel Itomura, a 6-year-old Fish-loving son of a friend and constituent.

"I was really surprised," said Oshiro, who has drawn up a bill that would make humuhumunukunukuapuaa — also known as the rectangular triggerfish or "humuhumu" for short — the official state Fish for the islands.

The stubby-nosed, brightly striped and slightly aggressive little fish whose name few tourists even try to utter (it's pronounced HOO-moo-HOO-moo-NOO-koo-NOO-koo-AH-poo-AH-ah) is commonly believed to be the state's favorite. The Fish figures into tourist trinkets, broadcast commercials and a much-beloved song about a little grass shack.

Much like its name, the Fish's road to titlelessness is long and confusing.

In 1984 the state Legislature asked the University of Hawaii and the Waikiki Aquarium to survey the public and come up with a candidate for the state Fish. The humuhumu was swept into the spot in part through the support of school children who learned of the campaign through classroom projects.

Although the issue of the state Fish would seem to come with little controversy, the method used to poll the public was questioned and lawmakers limited the designation to five years.

No one told the public that the humuhumu's reign was over, so few knew anything had changed.

And the humuhumu has its opponents.

State Rep. K. Mark Takai said he had objections to a similar bill a decade ago because many of his constituents were in favor of the oopu, a brownish, freshwater gobbie endemic to the islands, he said.

The humuhumu is not unique to Hawaii, he said.

There is no lack of Fish species specific to the islands. Thirteen species of wrass alone are found here and nowhere else in the world.

But while humuhumu may call more than just Hawaii its home, it has a few undeniable attributes on its side — cuteness and unpalatability.

"Here's a cute little fish. It kind of looks like a pig and it squawks and everything," said Chuck Johnston, editor of Hawaii Fishing news.

It's also a good candidate because no one eats a humuhumu, he said. Picking a popular game Fish such as the ulua could be a problem if environmentalists push to protect the fish from fishermen, he said.

Johnston has asked Gov. Linda Lingle to give the Fish the state title in perpetuity through an executive order.

In her reply early last year, Lingle said that decision should instead be left to the public. She also pointed out that the humuhumu has not historically been held in very high regard, having been used by early Hawaiians as fuel for their fires, not their stomachs.

While Johnston had originally advocated for the Pacific blue marlin two decades ago, his support now for the humuhumu is unwavering.

"The logical choice is the one that was already selected," Johnston said. "It has been there. He's been crowned."

Cool Facts About The Kamehameha Statue

Did you know that there are 4 very similar statues of Kamehameha I?

The first statue was commissioned by King Kalakaua and created by an American sculptor named Thomas Gould. It was cast Paris in 1880 and shipped from Germany to Honolulu. As fate would have it, the ship carrying it caught afire sank off the Falkland Islands. Luckily, the orignal mold used to cast the statue had not been destroyed, and a second statue was made and successfully shipped to HONOLULU, where it was installed in front of Ali'iolani Hale, across from the 'Iolani Palace in 1883 (and where it still stands today).

The original statue was later recovered from the shipwreck and installed near Kamehameha's birthplace, in Kohala on the island of Hawai'i.

The third statue was cast using a mold made from the Honolulu statue, and it was erected in the National Gallery in Washington D.C. in 1969.

The fourth statue was commissioned by a resort and cast in Italy in 1993. After much controversy, during which it was kept in a crate, it was finally installed in the town of Hilo on the island of Hawaii.

Mahalo to all of you!!! Blood Hawaiians much love to you my Ohana. I would also like to send much MAHALO to all the white man who supports the HAWAIIAN MOVEMENT!!!

King Kamehameha

Kamehameha the Great established his dynasty in 1810 upon unifying the islands of Hawaiʻi to become the Kingdom of Hawaiʻi.
Birth namePaiʻea
Reign1810-1819
SuccessorKamehameha II
PredecessorEstablished monarchy
ConsortKeopuolani, Kaʻahumanu
Borncirca 1758
Died1819

Kamehameha I, also known as Kamehameha the Great, (c. 17581819), conquered the Hawaiian Islands and formally established the Kingdom of Hawaiʻi in 1810. By developing alliances with the major Pacific colonial powers, Kamehameha preserved Hawaiʻi's independence under his rule. Kamehameha is remembered for the Mamalahoe Kanawai, Law of the Splintered Paddle, which protects human rights of non-combatants in times of battle.

Legendary birth

Although there is some debate as to the precise year of his birth, HAWAIIAN legends claimed that a great King would one day unite the islands, and that the sign of his birth would be a comet. Halley's comet was visible from Hawaiʻi in 1758, and it is therefore assumed that Kamehameha was Born shortly after its appearance.

Kamehameha's birth name was Paiʻea. He was Born to Keoua and Kekuʻiapoiwa, aliʻi of Kohala on the island of Hawaiʻi. His father, Keoua, was the grandson of Keaweikekahialiʻiokamoku, who had once ruled a large portion of the island of Hawaiʻi. When Keaweikekahialiʻiokamoku died, war broke out over succession between his sons, Keʻeaumoku and Kalaninuiʻamamao, and a rival chief, Alapaʻinuiakauaua. Alapaʻi emerged victorious over the two brothers, and their orphan sons (including Kamehameha's father) were absorbed into his clan.

When Kamehameha (Paiʻea) was Born, Alapaʻi ordered the child killed. one of his kahuna had warned him that a fiery light in the sky would signal the birth of a "killer of chiefs", or aliʻi. Alapaʻi, nervous at the thought of this child eventually usurping his rule, decided to take no chances. Paiʻea's parents, however, had anticipated this. As soon as he was Born, he was given into the care of Naeʻole, another aliʻi, and disappeared from sight. Naeʻole raised Paiʻea for the first few years of his life. Five years after his birth, Alapaʻi, perhaps remorseful of his actions, invited the child back to live with his family. There under the guidance of his kahu (teacher), Kekuhaupiʻo, he learned the ways of court diplomacy and war. Kekuhaupiʻo remained a faithful and trusted advisor to Paiʻea until the accidental death of the loyal kahu during a sham battle.

Paiʻea is said to have had a dour disposition, and acquired the name he is best known for today: Kamehameha, from the Hawaiian language term for "the lonely one".

In ancient Hawaii, legends told of a day when a great King would unite all the HAWAIIAN islands. The sign of his birth, kahuna (priests) claimed, would be a comet.

And so it goes that Kamehameha was Born in 1758, the year Halley’s Comet made an appearance over HAWAIIAN skies. Kamehameha was born in Paiea on the Big Island of Hawaii. His father was said to be Keoua, a grandson of Keaweikekahialiiokamoku, who once ruled a large portion of the island. Translated, Kamehameha means "the lonely one."

Another legend tells of a kahuna who prophesized that the man who moved the 7,000-pound Naha Stone would become the greatest King of Hawaii. When Kamehameha was 14, the story goes, he moved the massive rock, and then lifted it and turned it completely over.

Kamehameha grew up in the court of his uncle, Kalaniopuu. When Kalaniopuu died in 1782, his power was divided between Kamehameha and Kalaniopuu’s natural son, Kiwalao, who inherited his father’s throne. Civil war broke out, however, and Kamehameha emerged as the Big island’s ruler.

Many more battles ensued. During one raid in Puna, Kamehameha slipped and caught his foot in a crevice of lava. Seeing this, One of his fleeing opponents returned and beat him on the head with a canoe paddle until it broke. As a result, Kamehameha proclaimed Mamalahoe Kanawai, or "Law of the Splintered Paddle," providing protection to unarmed noncombatants in war. "Let the aged, men and women, and little children, lie down safely in the road," his law decreed.

Having gained control of his home island, Kamehameha turned to the other HAWAIIAN islands. Using weaponry purchased from American and European traders, the king conquered Maui and Molokai, then turned his attention to Oahu. In 1795, Kamehameha invaded the shores of Waikiki beach and led his army to Nuuanu, where a bloody battle with Oahu chief Kalanikupule ensued. Hundreds of Oahu’s warriors were killed, driven over the valley’s Pali cliffs.

In 1810, Kaumualii, the king of Kauai, peacefully surrendered his island to Kamehameha to avoid further bloodshed. With that, Kamehameha fulfilled his destiny of uniting all the HAWAIIAN islands under one rule.

The HAWAIIAN Kingdom enjoyed a period of peace during Kamehameha’s reign. the king unified the legal system and used taxes to promote trade with the Americans and Europeans.

Kamehameha died in 1819, and his son, Liholiho, took the throne. Kamehameha’s bones were hidden by his kahuna. Today, his final resting lace remains a mystery.
