One of 9 unanimous winners of BBWAA's NL Rookie of Year Award, earning honor in 1987.
Missed the entire 1998 season after he lost control of his Ferrari and crashed into a tree while traveling at a high rate of speed near his home in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. His passenger, Francisco Arroyo, was ejected from the car at impact. Arroyo spent six months in the hospital recovering from his injuries; Santiago needed almost a year of therapy before he was able to play baseball again. In October, 1999 Santiago announced that he would pay Arroyo $1.1 million in a settlement. (4 January 1998)
