Robson's contract as England coach was not renewed by the Football Association after the 1990 World Cup.

Appointed coach of the England football team on 8 August 1982.

He coached England in two FIFA World Cups, 1986 and 1990. In both tournaments, England were narrowly beaten by the eventual winners; Argentina in the quarterfinals of '86 and West Germany in the semifinals of '90.

His son, Mark, is married to Jane Walker. Her father murdered his wife Glenda with a shotgun on November 12 2002, after she discovered his affair. The case is currently (24 March 2004) being heard at Ipswich Crown Court.
