SCP was set up by Sheridan Coakley in 1985 to sell classic furniture designs of the Modern Movement (including pieces by Le Corbusier, Mies van der Rohe and Alvar Aalto) and to manufacture new products designed and made in the same spirit. Today, all the items commissioned and sold by the company maintain the tradition of functional, well made designs which are also a delight to see and touch.

Among the earliest products manufactured by SCP were tubular steel designs, some reproduced from the catalogue of PEL, the original maker, and some by new designers like Matthew Hilton.

In his first year of business, Coakley made a trip to Paris where he spotted the furniture designed by Philippe Starck for the Cafe Costes. The wit and ingenuity with which Starck invested his work appealed to Coakley and SCP became the first UK importer of his products.

In 1986, SCP exhibited for the first time at the Milan Furniture Fair. On show were the first ever manufactured designs by Matthew Hilton and Jasper Morrison, an event which marked the establishment of SCP as a pioneering force in the UK furniture industry.

Since then, SCP has continued to develop new products by Hilton (including the best selling Balzac armchair) and Morrison (among his work is the dining chair for Pharmacy restaurant, supplied by SCP). Other leading designers, including Terence Woodgate, Konstantin Grcic, Michael Marriott, Andrew Stafford, Tom Dixon and Robin Day, have also created exclusive products for the company.

Nearly twenty years after its inception, SCP is now firmly established as the UK's most innovative and internationally respected manufacturer, retailer and supplier of contemporary design.
