He and his political party have often been accused for being too intolerant towards immigrants in Norway. This has to some degree turned him into a controversial person. His party "Fremskrittspartiet" was the second largest party from 1997-2001.

Has been the leader of the Norwegian political party "Fremskrittspartiet" (Progress Party) since 1978. Has been a member of the Norwegian parliament "Stortinget" since the 1970's.

Once taking part in the celebrity game-show "Den store klassefesten" Hagen showed his love for America by riding an electric bull, wearing a cowboy-hat and at the same time answering questions about his favorite singer, Elvis.

A member of Norwegian parliament from 1974-1977, taking over when the founder of his party Anders Lange died in the post, and again in Parliament from 1981 and onwards.
