Trivia
Grand-scale, avante-garde artist whose trademark is "wrapping" buildings and landmarks in fabric. Escaped from his native Bulgaria in the mid-'50s when the uprising in Hungary sent tremors through the Soviet Eastern Bloc. Disaster befell the 1991 "Umbrellas" project, which opened simultaneously in Japan and California and consisted of thousands of large umbrellas (yellow in California and blue in Japan) dotting the landscape. In California, a spectator was crushed to death when a freak windstorm uprooted an umbrella. While the project was being taken down in Japan, a worker was electrocuted when his crane touched a power line. Has lived in the United States since 1964. He and his wife Jeanne-Claude were both born on the same day - June 13, 1935.
