Mini Biography
Dror Soref is an award-winning writer/director whose first directing assignment was a music video for "Weird Al" Yankovic that helped establish the rock parodist as a major star. Following his success in the music video field, Soref produced and directed Platinum Blonde, a thought-provoking 30-minute short sponsored by several leading children's charities. The film tells a hopeful story of two teenagers overcoming parental neglect.
As the creative force behind Platinum Blonde, Soref was profiled in The Los Angeles Times, Premiere Magazine, and The Hollywood Reporter, debunking the popular notion that size does matter. The short film also landed Soref a housekeeping deal at Paramount Studios, and with the help of the studio, The Seventh Coin became Soref's debut as a feature film writer/director.
The Seventh Coin, starring Peter O'Toole, won two festival awards including Best Picture, and inspired the Los Angeles Today critic to proclaim, "director Dror Soref has made an explosive debut with his powerful movie." In spite of the fact that the film's cash budget was less than $900,000, The Daily Variety described The Seventh Coin as "Handsomely produced, medium budget indie". Internet Movie Data base (IMDb) reports that the film's revenue topped three times its budget.
At Paramount Studios, Soref also founded Orbit Entertainment Group, and served as its CEO-director for over ten years. Soref directed or executive-produced over a hundred TV commercials for a client list that reads like a Who's Who of international advertisers, leading Orbit to become one of the fastest growing commercial production companies of the 90's. Under Orbit's umbrella, Soref signed a Strategic Alliance with Mike Medavoy's Phoenix Pictures. The deal called for Soref to produce five pictures for Phoenix, with one of them for Soref to direct. The first picture under this deal was Basic starring John Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson, and released by Columbia Pictures.
With roots in Spain, Soref attended the University of Haifa, Israel, earning a degree in economics. While a student, he wrote frequently on Israeli-Palestinian relations. Soref served in the Israeli Defense Force as a combat officer in the elite Golani Brigade. The unit under his command was cited for excellence and saw action in the Yom Kippur War. After the war, Soref resumed his political activities and, at the age of 23, he was nominated by his party to run for parliament. Soref later immigrated to the United States to attend the cinema school of the University of Southern California (USC).
Soref is represented by Nathan Ross at International Creative Management (ICM)
