Trivia
U.S. naval officer and naval-salvage expert whose engineering feats made him famous, such as running the nearly ten-month-long salvage operation of the submarine S-51, which had sunk off of Block Island. He resigned from the Navy with the rank of commander, but was recalled less than three years later to lead the rescue of the S-4, capsized near Cape Cod, an arduous experience he described in his book 'On the Bottom' (1929).
