Hugo Winterhalter was educated at Mount St. Mary's College and the New England Conservatory of Music. After playing with several swing bands in the 1930s, by 1940 he had proven himself to be a talented arranger and composer, going on to write for Count Basie, Claude Thornhill, Tommy Dorsey, Jimmy Dorsey, Raymond Scott and others. He then became musical director for the MGM, Columbia, and RCA Victor record labels. Hugo Winterhalter's music has a distinct 'sound', and his popularity was such that he had a number of Top 40 hit singles between 1950 and 1956, including "Canadian Sunset" and "The Third Man Theme". Near the end of his career, he worked on Broadway and television.
