Inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame in 1995.
Her grandfather, John C. Breckinridge, was Vice-President under James Buchanan.
Her father, Clifton Rhodes Breckiridge, served in Congress as a Representative from Arkansas, a minister to Russia and a commissioner of Indian affairs.
She was the nation's foremost pioneer in the development of American midwifery and the provision of care to the nation's rural areas as founder of the Frontier Nursing Service.
Cousin of Marvin Breckinridge.
One of her children died at birth, the other at the age of four. The stress was too much for her marriage.
