Former German soccer player, who also worked as a coach and has been technical director of German Football Association since 2006. During his professional career, he played for Dynamo Dresden (1985-1990), VfB Stuttgart (1990-1992), Inter Milan (1992) and Borussia Dortmund (1992-1998). He won two East German championships (1989, 1990) and three Bundesliga titles (1992, 1995, 1996) as well as the Champions League in 1997. Retiring with 74 caps for the national side (23 for East Germany, 51 for Germany), he became European Champion in 1996. He was the last player to score a goal for East Germany's national side before the reunification. Lives in Munich with his wife and their children Sarah, Marvin-Matthias and Leon. Chosen European Footballer of the Year in 1996 and German Footballer of the Year in 1995 and 1996. |
