Mini Biography
Oliver Stapleton, B.S.C (Director of Photography) has photographed a broad spectrum of critically-hailed, influential films. The Cider House Rules (1999) marks his first collaboration with director Lasse Hallström: currently they have shot 5 films together. He has teamed with filmmaker Stephen Frears eight times, beginning with the seminal film My Beautiful Laundrette (1985). He followed this with Frears' Prick Up Your Ears (1987), Sammy and Rosie Get Laid (1987), The Grifters (1990), _Hero (1992)_, The Snapper (1993) (TV), The Van (1996) and The Hi-Lo Country (1998). Stapleton has also worked with director Michael Hoffman on four occasions: A Midsummer Night's Dream (1999), the romantic comedy One Fine Day (1996), the Oscar-winning epic Restoration (1995), and Restless Natives (1985) which marked Stapleton's feature debut as a cinematographer. He worked with Julien Temple on the 50s musical Absolute Beginners (1986) and on the sci-fi comedy Earth Girls Are Easy (1989), earning an Independent Spirit Award nomination for the latter. He began his career shooting music videos and won an MTV Video Award for Best Cinematography for his work with the band A-Ha, on the video for "Take Me On."He has worked with David Bowie, the Rolling Stones, Eddie Grant, the Human League along with many other famous bands in the period 1980 to 1985.
The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep (2007) is his first outing into the world of VFX: he was fortunate to start at the top with Weta Studios, fresh from the success of the Lord of the Rings series and King Kong.
