Randy W. Schmidt grew up making Super-8 movies, most of them stop-motion animated. He attended UCLA film school and graduated with a BA degree in Motion Picture/Television in 1984. After working in the motion picture business for Die Hard producer Larry Gordon at 20th Century Fox, he relocated to Japan in 1996 and became a staff cameraman at the CNN Tokyo Bureau.
