Trivia
Wrote seven mystery/detective novels, but his significance to the field lies in his work as critic and editor. He wrote columns for the San Francisco Chronicle, The New York Times Book Review, Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine, and the New York Herald Tribune Book Review. As an editor of anthologies, he was nonpareil.
He had always wanted to be a playwright, and began writing mysteries only to support himself while he worked toward that goal. Fortunately for the field, he realized his talents lay outside of drama.
