Biography in: John Wakeman, editor. "World Film Directors, Volume One, 1890-1945". Pages 902-908. New York: The H.W. Wilson Company, 1987. His cinematographer Anatoli Golovnya (Mat (1926)) later taught Mikhail Vartanov at the legendary Russian film school VGIK. He fought in the Russian army during World War I, was wounded, and spent three years in a German POW camp.
