For more than 500 years, guests have been catered to below the St. Wolfgang pilgrimage church. The actual \"Weissen Rössl\" came into existence in 1878. Paul Johann Peter, heir to the Peter family of brewers, locally domiciled since 1711, acquired the \"Weissen Rössl\" in 1912 and thereby became the founder of the family-owned company that is now run personally by the third generation of the family.
The writers, Oskar Blumenthal and Gustav Kadelburg wrote the romantic comedy of the loving head waiter and the dynamic Weissen Rössl hostess during their stay at The Weissen Rössl in 1896. In 1930, Ralph Benatzky composed the captivating music, and on 8th of November 1930 the premiere of the \"The Weissen Rössl\" operetta took place at the great Schauspielhaus in Berlin. Since then \"The Weissen Rössl\" - translated into many languages - has galloped around the entire world and tells of the holiday romance on the Lake Wolfgang.
The harmony of mountains and lakes has always attracted artists, who sought and found their inspiration here.
Rudolf Alt, Gustav Mahler, Marie von Ebner Eschenbach and Johann Nestroy chose the Salzkammergut as their home. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, whose mother came from Lake Wolfgang, carried the musicality of this cheerful landscape to the high culture of Europe.
Even today, many people engaged in the cultural sector live in the lake region. Art and tradition are important here. So take advantage of the widely varied range of cultural events in the Salzkammergut. Each one is worth a journey in itself!
