The Village School
|
 pageo8 |
In 1874 Canvey's very first school was assembled opposite St Katherine's Church.A timber framed building,it's existance was solely due to the result of improvments for the community under the guidance of the Rev.Hayes. It was closed when Long Road school,Now William Read infant and Junior school, was opened as a secondary school. This well known landmark was then put to use as a village hall and social events and church meetings reguarly took place there until the fire, which almost completely gutted the building. The Cause of the fire,a mystery at the time, appeared to have started,in the chair store, burning clear through the floorboards.Strong winds helped fan the blazewas reported to be seen at the top of essex way. Praise was given to Canvey Fireman at their swift turnout by the mainland Officers and undoughtedly there speed saved the hall's complete distruction, through substantial damage resulted in a £2000 appeal being launched. The hall was only partially insured and this amout was estimated as needed against excess repairs.Sadly another piece of Canveys history is no more.
