NEW YORK (AFP) — The Jackson 5, one of the most successful US groups of all time, could be getting back together, according to Janet Jackson, who urged her older brother Michael to get back on stage for a reunion.

Rumors that the Jackson brothers could be planning a comeback have been circulating for years, but Janet Jackson told AFP in a recent interview she hoped the time was finally approaching.

"I hope so. I really hope so because I'll be the first in line to buy a ticket," she said. "I do know that my brothers want to and I know it's been kind of tough for Mike. He's kind of on the fence, from what I know about it."

The Jackson 5, who last performed as The Jacksons with six members, were rumored to be planning a reunion just before Michael Jackson went on trial for child abuse in 2005.

"Maybe he just wants to continue to be a solo artist and if that's what he wants then you have to respect his wishes," Janet said. "But what an impact it would have on the world and he has to see that because everyone else does.

"I think he'd have to be blind not to see that," she added.

The Jackson 5, featuring an 11-year-old Michael Jackson and brothers Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, and Marlon, were scooped up by Motown records in 1968 and soon found fame with hits such as "I Want You Back" and "ABC."

They were later joined by brother Randy and last toured together in 1984, formally disbanding in 1990.

Jermaine Jackson said last year the group had discussed getting back together and were hoping to appear together some time in 2008.

Janet Jackson has been honoured for her work in the gay community, receiving the Vanguard Award at the 19th Annual GLAAD (Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) Award.

The?ceremony, held?in Los Angeles' Kodak Theatre on Saturday, were presented by lesbian US talk show host Ellen DeGeneres.

Upon receiving her award, Janet said: "I love it. I never expected it in a million years so when I heard they wanted to honour me, I was really taken aback. It's just for the work that I've done with AIDS and acknowledging the gay and lesbian community through my music and so on. I'm just very appreciative."

Janet has always been vocal about gay rights, and even wrote her number one single Together Again as a tribute to a close friend who died from AIDS.

She added: "Even when I was younger, when I was growing up, my mother was very religious but there were a lot of kids who were dancers that she brought into the home and now that I think about it, they were gay.

"They all called her 'Mother' and she treated every one of them like they were her children. And that's where it kind of started, I suppose. I've been around the community all my life."

Janet Jackson will start trying for a baby after her tour.

The 'Together Again' singer and record producer Jermaine Dupri - who have been dating since 2002 - are eager to start a family once Janet's run of shows finishes later this year.

When asked if the couple want to have children, Jermaine replied: "Yeah, soon. Right after the tour."

Jermaine - who has a daughter, Shaniah, from a previous relationship - believes Janet, 42, will make a fantastic mother and he can't wait to start trying for a family.

He added to People magazine: "It really doesn't matter if we have a boy or a girl. Janet would be a great mom. She was around so many brothers and sisters all her life, so she's got to know what that is like. And her mom is a great mother."

Jermaine also revealed Janet is a good listener and offers him her full support whenever he needs it.

He explained: "The greatest thing in life is just to have a friend. When I have problems in life, I share them with her. When she has a problem, she comes to me."

It has been claimed the couple are planning to secretly marry in an intimate ceremony in France early next year.

A source said: "They want a very simple wedding in Paris with the Eiffel Tower as the backdrop. The wedding won't be extravagant, but they do want their families and friends to be there."

The ‘Together Again' singer will mentor a group of aspiring singers and dancers in the as-yet-untitled project, which will be filmed before Janet starts her world tour later this year.

A producer for the show said: "It's really about finding who's the next Janet Jackson or Justin Timberlake or Usher. And we'll find it from a pool of people who you wouldn't typically find it from. We'll go to YMCAs, church groups, local community centres and try to cast the show."

It has also been reported the winner of the show may be given the chance to appear in Janet's world tour, which starts in Vancouver, Canada, on September 10.

Janet recently revealed she would love her brothers to reform the Jackson 5, but is unsure whether she would join them on their rumoured Las Vegas residency.

She said: "This is the first I've heard that. I would love for my brothers to get together."

Janet's brother Jermaine has previously spoken of his wish to reform the band, saying: "It could be sometime in 2008. Michael will be involved. We feel we have to do it one more time. We owe that to the fans and to the public."

The "Nasty" hitmaker, who is known for her provocative dress sense, made the announcement at the Versace menswear show on Saturday during Milan Fashion Week in Italy.

And while she remained coy about specific details, she did tell reporters: "I'm working on it."

The underwear line is due to hit stores later this year.
