Biden for veep

I kind of like it that Obama and McCain have gone this far and not named their veeps. Adds some suspense to pre-convention talk.
But Barack's getting down to his moment. If I were in his shoes, I'd pick Joe Biden. I was reading this New York Times profile of Biden at lunch, and it reminded me why he stands out.
Here's a guy who's been chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and the Senate Judiciary Committee. Those are two huge committees that give him a strong familiarity with everything from national security to civil liberties to the Supreme Court to the international arena.
This week's events in Georgia point out how crucial that last category is for Obama. There's just no way he can look as seasoned as McCain when it comes to knowing the players in this dispute. But Biden does know them. In fact, as the Times reports, he's been in Georgia the last couple of days.
I know Cheney's a horrible comparison, but Biden would be like Cheney in that he knows the world and, this is very important, would almost surely not run for president himself. The guy's 65, so if Obama wins the earliest Biden could run is in eight years. No way he does that, creating a lot of breathing space for Obama. He doesn't have to worry about Biden undercutting him.

Of course, Sam Nunn's good for some of these same reasons. There seems to be more buzz around Biden, however. I'd nab him if I were Obama.
