The University of North Alabama Distinguished Events Series will present Kathryn Tucker Windham, one of the South¿s most renowned storytellers, who will share her stories on two different free and public events on September 26 and 27.Dr. William G. Cale said, ¿Mrs. Windham, who is Alabama¿s master storyteller, delights, entertains and informs her audiences. We expect a wonderful evening on Tuesday, September 26 and invite the community to attend the 7 pm function in Norton Auditorium.¿For those who cannot attend the evening function, Windham will speak again at noon, Wednesday, September 27, in Norton Auditorium.The author of 24 books, including 13 Alabama Ghosts and Jeffrey, Twice Blessed and several cookbooks, is in much demand as a speaker and entertainer. She is frequently featured on National Public Radio¿s ¿All Things Considered¿ segment. The Selma resident was the subject of a documentary by Norman Dill, Kathryn: The Story of a Teller, which won the George Lindsey UNA Film Festival 2005 professional best of show Golden Lion award.Windham has written for The Thomasville Times, Alabama Journal, The Birmingham News and The Selma Times-Journal. She has won Associated Press awards for her writing, as well as her photography.Windham has been widely recognized for her achievements. She holds honorary doctor¿s degrees from Huntingdon College, the University of Montevallo and Spring Hill College. The Kathryn Tucker Windham Museum was established on the Alabama Southern College campus in Thomasville. She has been inducted into the University of Alabama College of Communications Hall of Fame. She was one of 13 Alabama artists selected by the Alabama State Council on the Arts to represent the state in France and Monaco in 2000.Her storytelling career was initiated with her stories about Jeffrey, an active, friendly ghost who took up residence in her house in 1966.Dr. Roosevelt Newson, the vice president for academic affairs, will open the sessions. Dr. Charles William ¿Bill¿ Foster, an Appalachian storyteller who was the longtime chair of the UNA Department of English, will introduce Windham. Foster is now the director of the UNA Center for English Language.After Tucker¿s talks, Debbie Chaffin, the director of the UNA Educational Technology Services, will make closing remarks.
