Joel Nisleit is a Wisconsin native who grew up in Sheboygan, a city of about 50,000 dubbed "The Spirit on the Lake." In 2003 he graduated from Lakeland College with a B.A. in writing and the Outstanding Senior in Writing award under his arm. He has had poetry published in three national literary magazines and now works for The Mayville News, a small Wisconsin weekly ("strongly") newspaper, as a reporter/photojournalist. He has won Third Place in Business Coverage in the 2007 Wisconsin Newspaper Association contest. His photographs have appeared in a variety of publications.

Nisleit is fascinated with nature and wildlife, believing that the beauty of creation, its awesome and perfect designs, is like the sounding of a trumpet proclaiming the majesty of its Creator. He enjoys sharing his own wonder through images that are "as fantastic as I can possibly make them. I usually want a photograph to point somewhere even magical and let the viewer figure out where that place is for him or herself. I love it best when an image excites me to the point that I must laugh, wriggling and giddy."
