Both bossa nova guitarist Irio de Paula and tenor saxophonist Gianni Basso have recorded often for the small Philology label; this 2003 studio duo session is likely to inspire many more meetings between them. Mixing standards from the Great American Songbook and bossa nova favorites, the cool-toned Basso (whose lyricism makes him reminiscent of Stan Getz and Zoot Sims) and the intricate de Paula make magic with their interpretation of "Recado." Their loping take of "Stars Fell on Alabama" benefits from its bossa nova setting, while their extended workout of "It Might as Well Be Spring" never loses steam. This very intimate recording has the feeling of a private concert.
