The explosion of material that resulted in the Magnetic Fields' triple-disc opus 69 Love Songs would've wiped out the average tunesmith, but mastermind Stephin Merritt wields a pen of bottomless ink. Like a long-distance runner, he paced himself, saving up material lest his many guises should grow restless. The 6ths released Hyacinths and Thistles the following year; 2002 saw the sophomore effort from the Future Bible Heroes and the soundtrack to the James Bolton film Eban and Charley; and in...
I I
Though Buffalo Daughter's previous albums balanced pop and experimentation artfully, the group makes its first real misstep with I, its third album and Emperor Norton debut. Actually, calling the album a misstep might be putting it too strongly -- there's plenty to recommend it, including the darkly dreamy opener "Ivory," which, with its ethereal harmonies, twining guitars and sleek beats, recalls the group's work with Takako Minekawa; "Five Minutes," a mix of sparse, spooky beats and sweet y...

The band sounds quite comfortable with this format (including Darryl Jenifer's melodica playing). Altoist...
I (Who Have Nothing) I (Who Have Nothing)
Tom Jones fell out of the Top Ten with I (Who Have Nothing), but the title track was one of his biggest hits, as well as being one of the best moments on this consistent, but average set, which also featured fine versions of "To Love Somebody" and "Try a Little Tenderness."

I Against I I Against I
I Against I was for Bad Brains what London Calling was for the Clash -- the band's first fully mature work, one which successfully brought together all of its diverse influences while at the same time showcasing a singular vision. Also like London Calling, it was to be the band's masterpiece, in the original sense of that term -- a creative pinnacle which they would not reach again. The album opens with the title track, a blistering and musically exhilarating deploration of violence, and then...
