The Sun Inn Description

The Sun at Faversham

PhotooftheSunInnActually its full title is The Sun Inn, and now once again offers accommodation to travellers on their way to Dover or Canterbury. Situated in West Street, it stands out as an extremely old building in an ancient street. A little bit of history would not go amiss.

The building is said to have been built in 1396, the last year of the crusades, during the reign of Richard II. Architecturally, it has also been described as "a timber-framed two-storey 15th century Hall". Although it is not beyond the realms of possibility that it was actually built during the last decade of the 14th century. It changed hands many times during the 16th century and was much altered. In 1554 it was advertised as a "Lodging tenemente with good staybling." It has probably been known as "The Sun" throughout its existence. However this is confirmed when it was granted an ale and liquor licence in 1608 "under the sign of the Sun".

In 1781 the upper floor was badly damaged by an explosion in the gunpowder factory, an accident that caused much loss of life. The well-known Faversham Porter Club was founded in The Sun during 1793 and remained at the inn for the next 80 years, before moving to The Ship, and then to a purpose-built property in Gatefield Lane where it still exists today as The Faversham Club. It was sold in 1845 to Henry Shepherd of Shepherd's Brewery of Court Street, the forerunner of Shepherd Neame.

Inside there has been quite a lot of change over the years but it still holds an air of timelessness. There is much wood panelling and some is said to date from the 16th century. A step up to the right of the bar takes you into a small area with a large fireplace. This is a very atmospheric part of the pub. Apparently it had been hidden away until the 20th century, when it was incorporated into the rest of the public area. It has been said that this was once another public house which closed when taken over by The Sun's owners. This is an attractive theory, especially as there is a difference of floor levels. However there is no documented evidence to confirm it.
