Reed Elsevier's key objective is to become the indispensable partner to its target customers: scientists, lawyers and business professionals, for information-driven services and solutions.

Reed Elsevier Group plc is owned equally by Reed Elsevier PLC and Reed Elsevier NV. Operating in the science & medical, legal and business-to-business industry sectors, Reed Elsevier provides high value and flexible information solutions to professional end users, with increasing emphasis on the internet.

The foundations of Reed Elsevier PLC were laid in 1894 when Albert E Reed established his newsprint manufacture at Tovil Mill in Kent, England. It became a public company in 1903. The name of the parent company was changed to Reed International Limited in 1970, to Reed International P.L.C. in 1982 and, in 2002, to Reed Elsevier PLC.

Reed Elsevier NV came into being in 1880 when Jacobus George Robbers started a publishing company in Rotterdam taking the name of Elsevier from a 16th century Dutch family of booksellers and printers. Elsevier was established in New York, through a joint venture, in 1937, and Excerpta Medica was founded in 1946. In 1960, Excerpta Medica launched its electronic database, Embase. The Elsevier Publishing Company was started in the US and the UK in 1962. In 1971, the merger of Elsevier Publishing Company N.V., the Noord Hollandsche Uitgeversmaatschappij (or the North Holland Publishing Campany) and Excerpta Medica formed Associated Scientific Publishers. It was renamed Elsevier Scientific Publishers in 1979. In 1991, Elsevier acquired Pergamon Press in the UK. In 2002, Elsevier NV was renamed Reed Elsevier NV.
